Yesterday I posted a message about my pentium class system not detecting its installed 256k of external pipeline burst cache at power up. Since I have received no responses to that post and have not been able to solve the problem myself, I will assume that this means the cache has failed. The motherboard I own is a typical pentium motherboard manufactured before MMX and is upgradable to 200 Mhz. The exact model is a "GA-586ATE", as shown on the cover of the manual. On visual inspection of the motherboard as well as comparing it to the manual, the following seem to be true:
1. The tag RAM is contained in a removable IC.
2. The data RAM is soldered onto the board.

My question is: Can I replace the cache or do I have to purchase a new motherboard?

It *might* be possible depending entirely on the motherboard, but it's probably not the wisest solution. Your best bet would be to get a new motherboard. They're not too expensive (might even be cheaper than trying to add/replace cache).

However, answer me this: The tag RAM you say is on a removable IC, describe that in more detail.

Reason?: I have a cache module here from a Pentium system. It's on a little circut board like regular RAM but it is 160-pin. It says "256k Sync Pipeline Burst".

If it'll fit in your board I'll be happy to send it to ya (no charge http://www.norcov.com/~donc/tounge.gif ). It's just collecting dust in my spare parts pile. If you want it, e-mail (in case I forget to come back to this message).
