Hi,
I posted earlier about my computer not going into standby, well I narrowed the problem down to my wacom tablet and my com ports. Whether it's installed in 1 or 2, my computer won't go to standby when it's plugged into either port. How do I get my ports working right? And there's more... I purchased the new Norton System Works primarily for the AntiVirus and a few of the diagnostic tools to only be used manually. But it won't install. I continue to get a series of 2 or 3 error messages saying that Norton files are linked to missing export mfc42.dll:6673 The microsoft site said to extract the file from win98 cd, which I did. No change. But I noticed that my version of mfc42.dll is 4.21.7160 and they suggest version 4.21.7325. Could this be the problem and if so, how do I get the new version? Which leads to my next question: if you reinstall windows, do you lose all the updates you've previously downloaded from the update site? If so, how do I go back and find the updates that would contain a new version of this file? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!
Desperate & Despairing,
Kay

Hi Kay

You can get a later ver of mfc42.dll (ver 6.00.8267.0) here http://solo.abac.com/dllarchive/M.html

Windows may let you rename the file when it will not let you replace or delete them, as it may be in use when you try to copy it to your Windows\System directory.

Try renaming mfc42.dll to mfc42.old, and then copy across the new file, re-boot and the new file should take effect. You can then delete mfc42.old.

Yes, you'll lose your updates if you reinstall. Best is to backup your updates/patches (and your data) before you reinstall, if possible. Saving them in a special folder helps makes this easier to accomplish. There's an MS link to MS patches/updates though if you need to do this manually.

Hope this helps some.

Thanks for the help socalgal--I'm off to find me a new dll file! But before I go, can you save a copy of the updates from the MSWindows update site when they are installed automatically? And if so, how?

Win98? You can download the SP1 from http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/highlights/win98update.asp

Old patches/updates from the archive if you're running an older vers or Win95
http://www.microsoft.com/security/bulletins/archive.asp

Current bulletins http://www.microsoft.com/security/bulletins/current.asp

You may have to do some figuring to decide which patches have already been installed, but it doesn't hurt any to reinstall them.

When the File Download dialog box opens, if you choose 'Run This Program from its Current Location' then no, it's not saved to your hdd. If you choose 'Save this Program to Disk' then it's on your hdd to the directory you specified, so sure, then it can be saved. The updates usually install automatically, either way you choose to download.

A good idea I heard from other members here which I've started to use, is to created a special folder for these downloads, so you can back them up easily and separately.

EDIT: The 'Current Bulletins' link is now correct. Apologies.
