I have a 10.2G Maxtor (non -UDMA) drive that came with my computer and I just got a 13.6G Maxtor ATA/66 drive and I could not make it a slave to the original drive. I set the original one to master, the new one to slave on the primary IDE channel. I set the cdrom to master on the secondary IDE channel. I followed the directions that were supplied with the new drive to make it functional, and it did not work. The computer took a long time to get to the disk that came with the new drive that was supposed to set the new drive up, and finally I gave up because it was taking 10-20 min to get to the english version the the setup program. I disconnected the original drive, removed the secondary IDE channel, set the new drive to master and the cdrom as slave, got out the bootdisk, and fdisked the new drive. It is now partitioned and formatted. I am wondering how to get the operating system to the new drive as it is faster RPM-wise. Otherwise I have no problem putting the new drive on its own channel.

The best way is through a clean install of win95 or win98 which ever one you are using. If you have a bootable drive, then all you have to do now is install a copy of MSCDEX.EXE in your root directory. Next your CDrom drivers then install windows and your off and running. ( You can obtain a copy of MSCDEX.EXE from the #1 dos disk version 6.0 or greater) I hope this is what you wanted if not oops. /forum/smile.gif

Nope, not exactly what I had in mind. Installing win98se was a royal pain in the you-know-what and I don't want to have to do it again if I do not have to. What I have now is the old drive as master and cdrom as slave on primary channel; and new drive as master on secondary channel. The instructions that came with the new drive say that I can copy info from old to new using their diskette. Do they have to be on the same channel to do this??

There's no mention whether you set the drives up in the BIOS
...or used Windows Fdisk/Format.
...or tried setting the drives up as MASTER/MASTER on IDE1/IDE2?

I fdisked the original when it came with the system and the bios is set to autodetect it. The new drive i ended up fdisking and it is set to autodetect as well in the bios.
The original drive is the master on the primary ide channel and the new drive is master on the secondary channel...is that what you are asking bleedingedge?

I could be wrong, but I think that one of the quetions bleedingedge was asking was whether or not you set the jumper(s) on the back of the drives to a master or slave configuration.

well whaddaya know...it works!
I tried hooking it up the same way I had it last night that caused it to freeze, and now it works. Old is master and new is slave on primary, and cd is master on secondary. I guess it has to be formatted before it can be a slave.....whatever.
Now all I need to know is how to get my os from old to new drive???
