My friend wants to buy a new chip, AMD K6-2 450, he has 64Mb EDO.
He has to buy new memory doesn't he, I know this is a simle question but I wanted to be 100%.
Cheers.

Not a simple question because there are multiple answers.

Some Super7 motherboards can use older EDO 72pin SIMMs (the FIC VA 503+ for example) but not many boards do. Most of the Super 7 boards use only SDRAM DIMMs, but some may be able to run with EDO DIMMs. PC-100+ SDRAM DIMMs are recommended.

Also, it is not likely that the EDO memory will run on the 100mhz system bus, so the memory or even the entire front side bus might have to be set lower (depending on the memory quality -to 66mhz) in order to get it to run.

It depends on the board you want to use. We have a K6-3 400 on an ax59 board from aopen using 64 megs of fpm.
When sdram comes down a bit more, we'll switch over.

If you can find an older super7 board that supports EDO with a VIA MVP3 chipset, you can clock the front side bus at 100mhz while still leaving the memory bus at 66mhz. It's not a great solution, but it does work.

RobRich is right. Find an old MVP3 w/ SIMM + DIMM slots. You can fix it @ 66MHz while running @ 100MHz.

You can, in fact I do. I have an FIC 503+ with an AMD K6-2 350 running at 112x3.5=392 with 64megs EDO RAM. Absolutely no problems although my memory performance according to SANDRA is not good, but I run Quake 2, System Shock 2, etc. flawlessly. My system even has perfect DVD playback (all software decoding). I have a generic 4meg AGP card and an original 4meg Diamond Monster. I built this system for practically nothing and it impresses the hell out of me everyday.

Soyo 5EMA does it quite well and you can even mix it with PC100 with success.

I am typing this post on an FIC 503+ mb, k2-400 and 32mb edo ram. So I guess it does work. Just finished setting up win98 on this machine. We'll see if it will keep on running. Have another 32mb edo, just have not put it in yet. So no news is good news. I did not think it would run on 100fsb. I was incorrect. Wonder if the ram can take 450 /forum/smile.gif.
