3 1/2 floppy is being recognized on start up by the bios. But once into windows it shows up, but doesn't respond? Tried new floppy drive and same thing. Bios and Windows show that it's there...but if you put a disk in and try and go to it...it sits for a few seconds then comes back saying drive isn't ready??????or failed...????? /forum/frown.gif
checked cable and even re-installed cable a few times. Still same results... what's up???
thanks

Check in Device Mgr. and see if the controller is sharing its IRQ or any other resources w/another device....

Since the device manager doesnt always show if anything is wrong in normal operating mode I would suggest that you try booting into safemode by pressing F8 right before it says starting windows at boot up and then checking the device manager for any descrepancies like exclamation marks(splats) or references to more than one floppy (if there are extras remove them) or anything that might be out of the ordinary and also check out the IRQ list by highlighting the "computer" entry at the top of the list and then clicking on the properties button. hope that will help or at least shed some light on your situation.

What operating system do you have? Windows 95 or windows 98? If you have windows 95 or 98 try replacing the hsflop.pdr file, this may be corrupted. If 98 try going into system, preformance, file system and then floppy disk , and make sure , "search for new floppy disk drives" is checked
Hopes this helps

I might also add to aaron2b's post that if you are running Windows98 and it does solve your problem by enabling the check for new floppy drives , that after it has been detected and installed correctly, I "suggest" that you should go back and disable the floppy detection by unchecking it. Other wise I believe that the OS will try to detect a new floppy everytime you boot, and may in turn create new problems. But I could be off base here, so if I am wrong on this one someone please feel free to correct me /forum/smile.gif...

I had the same problem a while back when building a new PC.
The problem was caused by the floppy disk not being entered into the drive correctly. This usually happens when the case is one of the "slot" variety for the floppy.
Hope this helps,

Not sure what happened. But everything crashed. Hard drive "suddenly" developed 23,000,000 bad sectors. Floppy never did come back. etc. etc. Pulled system apart. Pile of puter parts now. OH well, will work on something else.
