I am working on a compaq presario 5461 and it does not shut down properly. i have win98se and I have downloaded the patch from the ms update site. anyone have any solutions to this problem???
what happens 50% of the time is the splash screen blinks on and off for 10 mins or even more. I think it has an ATX board because the power button does not shut off the machine. any advice will be appreciated.

Hi again,
I saw this solution on call for help a few weeks back, maybe it will work for you. It sounds weird, I know but Leo reccommended trying it LOL. right click on mycomputer/go to properties/performance tab/filesystem button/cdrom tab and back off the supplimental cache size to small..OR try this : go to startmenu/accessories/system tools/system information/when the dialog box opens up click on tools/system configuration utility/click on the advanced button/then check disable fast shutdown/and reboot....
I personally havent tried the first option I mentioned so I couldnt really tell you if it will work or not but if I remember correctly the person that called in had a similar prob as you. As for the second option, the solution worked for me (so far) my computer started to restart whenever I went to shutdown completely last week but since I checked the disable fast shutdown it hasnt done it again ( so far I havent had to install the patch "yet" knock on wood LOL).
I hope that helps...

I think you must go type msconfig at the start/run command. There you can shutoff the quick shutdown. This has solved many shutdown problems. Good luck!

I do not seem to have the option to enable/disable fast shutdown in msconfig. I do have win98se on this machine.....can it be removed because i have found other things that are on my own personal machine that this one does not have.....

Hmmm... would it be possible that it wasnt installed when the OS was? Mine was installed by default when I put 98SE on my HD so I really dont know about this situation. Can you go into add/remove programs and add it from the system tools option? Maybe power management is the cause if it is enabled. This is just a stab in the dark so I think you got me stumped there deep_sky. If I find out though I will drop a post here for you ...

Most ATX machines have a feature that does not allow you to "accidentally" shut off the machine by hitting the power off switch.

You will find that if you hold in the power off button for 10 to 15 seconds, it will shut off the machine.

Sorry, I'm unable to assist on your other shutting off problem.
