I am moving next week and I am looking into getting a faster internet connection. I am not really familiar with the types of connections other than hearing them mentioned. What are the pros/cons of each, and how do I find out which are available in my area??

ISDN I dont know much about, but its getting to be a bit slow and I wouldnt define it as hi-speed internet anymore

Cable, you share bandwith with everyone on the same node as you in your city, But its still pretty fast, I usually get 40-120k second. Also if everyone in your area starts getting cable.. then itll be real slow till company adds wires. Also, @Home limits your uploads to 15k to prevent servers.

ASDL, its max speed isnt as fast as Cable but it usually runs about the same speed, but without a limited upload! =), I THINK that you actually buy the modem as opposed to renting it, although correct me if I'm wrong.
**Forgot to say, with ASDL you DONT share bandwith, its all yours!!!! hehe **

Anyway Cable and ASDL are both the same price range 40-50 a month, And both are great services, just wait to see what your new location has for ya

We just switched to a cable modem here (No. Ga) I a lot of the time your speed will determine on the company. for instance, Medio-One uses its Nodes to there full capacity (2400 users) before it sets up a new one, which can considerably slow down connections. However, the company we starts using, Prestige.Net, only allows 300 users per 2400-user Nodes in order to keep connections high. They just install another nose int he area when they reach there own limit. Even in the middle of the day here I get downloads of 190k/sec! So I think a lot of it has to do with your area, so make sure you check out all the companies =)
Hope that was interesting,

Thanks for the info. I just found out about a company that offers adsl in the area for $38 a month with a $250 sign up/equipment fee. This sounds reasonable to me for that kind of performance.

I'm on @home here in Calgary(can.) And the "installer guy" said they add a node every 500 users. Getright has shown dowload speeds of .32mb/s while dowloading mulitiple files (32). But I normally see 40-90k/s for individual files. Here it's $40 (can)/month....which is great concidering an extra phone line is $20, plus internet access ($20).

can you hook up more than one computer with a cable modem? For example can I have my computer hooked up to it in my room and my brothers in his room? Thanks

yes you can hook up more than one to the modem but you need to buy a CATV cable..which im getting tomorrow to hook up my dads...but i think if you wanna do file sharing or anythign lie that you need some sort of network hub. Ill find out soon!
