any clues guys?
Martin,
give us a bit more information -
1) - what operating system are you using?
2) - does the system have a modem - what kind?
3) - have you checked the device manager for conflicts?
4) - what kind of computer is it?
5) - what's the specific model of the sound card?
best bet is to check device manager and check the "my computer" properties for IRQ and other conflicts. You might also think about taking out the modem itself after making sure you know where the software for it is, then reinstall it, allowing the system to "auto-detect" it and re-install the drivers. Also - check the modem manufacturer's web site to see if a newer driver is available there. If it's small enough, download it to floppy, and select the specific driver from 'have disk' when re-installing the modem. This may be a problem the modem manufacturer already knows about and has fixed for you with a new driver. Lastly, typically, the newer sound cards have inputs on then where you can plug in both CD and modem sound cables - did you? and did they get switched? < probably not the problem, but worth checking while you're in there.

Sounds like an MWave which is an all in one solution with Modem and sound on the same card. Very F'd up deal the Mwave. Remove the device from the Device Manager and install manuall with drivers from a floppy or folder you create. Should let you choose the device if there is more than one driver in the inf file. If you have an Mwave the best device is to throw it into the nearest river you can find and buy a decent soundcard. MX300 and the Live Value are excellent buys for the money or a SB16 goes for 20 bucks or less these days.
I'd forgotten all about MWave modems - good catch ktwebb - that would definitely cause this type of trouble. Thought they stopped making those in the ole 14.4 modem days. Been years since I've seen one. I'd have to agree - even when they were new, they were a door-stop. You almost always had to call support for a custom modem string to get them to work right.

win 98 se
no conflict
system is
Amd
64mb
Asus p5a mobo
(not the one with sound build in)
sound card is yamaha 713 or 733 isa
modem is acer 56k pci
Note:a zoltrix winmodem use to be in
and i try a different sound "isa" and add the asame problem
Ok,The wave device is part of the modem,it will always be listed under sound devices in the device mgr. This is what enables your acer modem to do voice.
Does the device mgr show any unknown devices? If so, this is probably your sound card.Go to properties of the unknown device and select reinstall drivers and then point to the location of the drivers.(CD,Floppy,or a directory that you created).Let us know if you are having any problems.
