Citing lost productivity, the "technophobic" of LAPD's Metro Transit Division have banned the use of personal notebook computers on company property even during personal time.
Although no one was sitting around playing games and work was being done in a timely manner in our busy shops where we build and maintain special service vehicles, personal computers have been banned unless a permit is granted which is harder to obtain than a conceiled weapons permit. In the opinion of fellow nurdgeeks this is the result of technoparanoia on the part of upper management who still think that the notebook is a sign of power and not a sign of the times. I think they may fear we can keep a database of certain things. Will we ban paper and pen next?
IMHO - more time is wasted by cell phones, hot rod magazines, smoking, and nit-picky meetings to inform employees not to bring computers to work.
