I am working on a system that will not make it through [scandisk /surface] I tried on four diff. occasions with same results sysloc @ 65%. I guess I could try a LLF but, I can't crack tha case to get the drive info. It's a Compaq Presario 4112 desktop. Is scandisk the only prog. that works w/ Windoz other than OEM utils.?
Thx,_-Livewire--

Try Norton Utilities or System works, I find it faster than windows scandisk and also defrag works faster, it can do a Windows sys check at same time. Save me quite a bit of work. /forum/wink.gif

I had the same problem a few days ago on an older system at work and here's how I resolved it.
I went into safe mode ( <F8> boot right after seeing <starting Windows95> on the boot screen ) and emptied all the temp files on the system, then emptied all the internet temp files on the system.
Then I started a scandisk here. Options checked were <.>Thorough Scan/surface scan
and <.>automatically fix errors
Then I walked away. It took 4 sessions like this on the computer to finally get through the entire hard drive, but had to do it so I could next run Defrag. << also in safe mode.
If you truely have a damaged hard drive, this might not work. Also, make sure to turn off any type of screen saver on your system while doing this .
Lastly, make sure you go on-line, get the latest anti-virus definitions, and do a sweep of your system just in case it's a virus writing to the disk that is causing Scandisk to stop. Hopefully not the case, but it doesn't hurt to make sure.
Best of luck.

I agree with welsh wizard Norton utilities is one of the best programs for what your trying to do. If you have a Sams club near by they aren't that expensive. Good luck Butch /forum/smile.gif
If ya can't get nortons you might try to run scandisk from dos.Just boot to a dos prompt then go to your c: prompt and type scandisk c: /autofix/thorough.This should do it.
