I have emailed Pioneer, and will be calling them tommorow.

My problem is that I just bought a new Pioneer DVR-610 Internal DVD/CD Writer. I hooked it up, made it the Master, and my other CD-RW the slave, and booted up. Windows XP installed it fine, and it went ok. Then I tried putting in the software DVD that came with it. After the computer slowed like hell, it found the DVD, with a broken icon though. No autorun popped up, so I explorered the disc.

I then tried running autorun.exe on the CD, and it gives me this error:

"D:\AutoRun.exe is not a valid Win32 application."

I tried setup.exe, same error. I tried many other .exe files on the DVD, and all gave me that error. Bad CD perhaps? I put in my new copy of TES4: Oblivion, which I bought this DVD player for, and after slowing down to a halt again, the DVD drive doesn't find anything. In My Computer, it shows its icon and "D: CD Drive". I tried a plain CD disc, and it still doesnt find anything.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers, letting Windows do it of course, and still have this problem.

What the hell is going on? I am getting sick of DVD drives, they never work for me, ever.

Remove the CDRW from the cable and boot again

I only buy DVDRWs now since they are so cheap. I haven't bought a CDRW in years.

I tried Safe Mode, and the DVD that came with the drive worked. Now, why won't it work in normal mode? :( I tried disabling my firewall and anti-virus software, no luck.

Since it works in Safe Mode, you must have an incorrect driver loaded.

Delete the DVD drive in device manager, remove the drive from the case and unplug it, reboot into normal made and go to the desktop. Shut down, install the drive again, then boot. It should redetect the drive and load the correct driver. If not, manually update the driver.

I tried this, didn't work still. I also tried googling drivers for it, and I can't find any. Neither is there any on Pioneer's site.

Did it again, now it doesn't even find the DVD in the drive. Third time's the charm? I hate this, I will also be calling the company soon.

I never once found that, thanks. I will try that before I go get a new one from Fry's today.

I still think it might be some registry problem or something, my CD-RW was having problems a few days ago, and I had to delete some things in the registry for it to work again.

Tried it, and when I run the .exe file to install the new firmware, I get this error:

Just got back from Frys with a new drive, same one, just another. Still doesn't work. Wow, what. the. f***.

Edit:

I checked the driver details, and it uses a cdrom Windows driver. Is this anything to worry about? It's a DVD drive.

Try this one instead.

It looks like you have a DVD-110D not a 610

Check above post, we posted at same time. Also, that isnt for the DVR-610. Using firmware not for your specific drive isn't recommended... are you sure? Thanks for your help so far.

Edit- No, it is a 610 lol. I'm staring at the box. DVR-610

LOL! The box means nothing, people swap out drives at places like Fry's and CompUSA all the time. In fact, some people will buy a drive, swap another into the box, and return it. It's called larceny by conversion and happens all the time. Hardly anyone gets caught.

Never heard of it.

I did just notice though that in Hardware Manager, it is recognized as a 110. WTF?

So what, people buy one drive, swap in some crappy thing, and return it and get their money back? Fry's checked it out big time when I went there today, suprised they didn't lick it to make sure it tasted the same as others.

Tried this again, since Windows thinks it's a 110D. Got the same error as before:

NEC?

Yes, the company NEC makes some of the best burners around, at some of the lowest prices. NEC has been a premium optical drive brand for at least 12 years, so if you haven't heard of them, it's because you weren't listening. For the past 4 years they've represented the upper mainstream market with fast, reliable products at lower than average prices.

NEC and Lite-On compete directly to offer the best value in the industry without sacrificing quality, and usually beat out newbie-market brands like Pioneer and Sony by a fairly significant margin.

But you already bought a Pioneer. I doubt you even got the model you paid for. And even if you did, Pioneer sells to newbies by being a well-known brand, knowledgable buyers usually stay away from them.

*******'s for the win. Thanks for the info though.

Now, any other way to fix my problem besides a new drive?

Maybe you can sell the Pioneer drive (or return it) and get this one.

If Fry's doesn't have any, I will defiantely try to order one.

But I was hoping I could get a fix besides buying a new drive. :(

Have you tried resetting your BIOS to factory defaults yet? You may have a setting wrong which causes the CDRW to fail in normal mode.

The DVDRW is failing. And I checked the BIOS, and nothing seems out of place. I haven't changed it at all for the DVDRW.

NEC has been at this forever. NEC stands for Nippon Electric Company. They helped develop the CD and DVD. As a matter of fact, NEC made the very first consumer CD and DVD burners. Their guts are in a lot of other makers drives.

People talk about how great a deal Lite-On drives are, but NEC drives are made better and cost about the same. They are also popular drives for "hot-rodders" because custom firmware is available from many sources.

I only buy NEC and Samsung drives these days.

Crashman
03-27-2006, 06:50 AM
I don't buy Samsung drives because of their high failure rate. Of course you might not have noticed of you haven't own very many. I've had a couple hundred at most, and at least 30 failures within 3 years of use.

Lite-On lives a little longer, I usually see them going around 5-6 years. Haven't had any problems with other major labels either, but at the bottom for reliability I have Cyberdrive>Samsung>Behavior Tech (etc).
