I have a 10.2GB Maxtor hd set as master with the cdrom as slave. I am getting a Western Digital 13GB drive. Where can I get another ide cable to put in the secondary chain slot. Should I put the new drive as master on its own cable or should I slave it to the current hd and put the cdrom as master on its own cable. Which configuration would allow me to utilize the new harddrive as I would one of my logical drives . I do not want to have the 13GB set up in to logical drives, I just want it to have a drive letter that can be accessed like any other. I also do not want to cause any conflicts in my system.
Could really use some advice about how to run two physical drives in my computer. The 13GB will be used primarily as storage.

You can buy the cable on any store were they sell computer hardware. You can install the HD as a primary or slave it all depends on your like... but making the HD master will enable you to boot from it in case of a problem with the first one.
Just format the drive and don't make any extra partitions... that will make it have a full primary partition with no logical ones.

master your main buy it's self
then master your othere hard drive and slave the cdrom to it on the 2nd controler
that will speed up install's as it can read from the cdrom and write to the main hard drive at the same time
then put your vertual memery on the 2nd hard drive do it right after you install it with nothing is on it yet so that the all the vertual memery is at the front of the drive that will also speed up your system a little /forum/smile.gif

I would master and slave the two hard drives together. Which ever way you want, if you do the old to the new you save reloading all your programs. Then use your CD own it's own IDE controler sometimes a cd drive will slow down a hard drive. Good luck which ever way you decide /forum/smile.gif

i agree with putting the cdrom on the secondary ide and the two hard drives on the primary. as scotter said - it will speed up installation times and also games that you play that need the cd in the drive.
Thinking one more step ahead, you'll most likely want your CD-ROM on the second cable by itself because, should you get a CD burner, you'd slave that on the second cable for faster burn times.

I also agree with putting the two hard drives on the primary and the cdrom on the secondard. I have this set up and my burner is slave on the secondard with the cdrom as the master on the secondard. it works great.
