Ok went out and bought a nice flat tube 30" widescreen hdtv etc......
put me back a good penny but well worth it
got it at the best electronics store on the planet IMO , BEST BUY! never had a problem but anyway to the point
as I was buying the tv the salesperson told me to get a surge protector because he said there was a circuit or some BS in the tv that if I have a power outage that the tv would be useless if I didn't purchase one
did I sense some sort of ploy to get his commision up or is he right that I should buy one?

Why is this in Off Topic?
Not only should you use a surge protector, but you should consider a battery backup with AVR so that you can watch TV for a few minutes should the lights go out.
Surge protectors are recommended for any expensive electronics.

Have surge protection on all my electronics and pc's.
I didn't think 30" tv's were really expensive; I must be used to sticker shock. :t

chriswhitelaw;
I didn't mean that as any kind of put down or insult. Just pointing out how desensitized I've become to pricing.

sorry Bill didn't know where else to go with this topic
actually the only 2 reasons I got it were for the 360 and movies
guess that means a best buy employee was telling the truth , gee whoever thought that would happen?

Is 30" a regular size of tv in America? that size is unheard of in the UK.
we generally have 26", 28", 29", 32" & more, but I've never seen a 30" advertised anywhere.
Just got a 32" HD ready LCD myself - now I need a 20ft video lead so I can hook my computer up to it. :r

I've been working a lot of overtime since the end of January (gotta earn while the getting's good - just 'til the summer months anyway! ;)), I didn't get home tonight until after 9 again & most evenings are spent, scrubbing up, eating and watching the days events on the tube. I sometimes post replies when I get up in the morning & spend 1\2 hour sipping my cup o' tea. ;)
F connectors - we use the "snap 'n seal" type, you'd need an Augat Tool (http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=http://www.mindlogic.com/images/AVDIS_AGAT_it1000.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.mindlogic.com/AVDIS_AGAT_it1000_DTL.shtml&h=118&w=108&sz=3&tbnid=OtIkMzHJdj5aFM:&tbnh=82&tbnw=75&hl=en&start=10&prev=/images%3Fq%3DAugat%2BTool%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Den%2 6lr%3D%26sa%3DG) to fit them though! I go through at least a hundred of the things every week & I'm always amazed at how fast they disappear out of my toolbox.
Porsch - my last job tonight was installing to a 50" Plasma Philips! My verdict: you need to sit at least 15ft away to watch it or picture "digitisation" can be distracting, unless you're watching in HD mode. Plasma's also suffer image burn-in fairly easily & product lifetime expectancy is around half that of LCD's. Modern LCD has a much wider field of view & doesn't suffer burn-in so easily! Lifetime expectancy is up to 80,000 hours continuous use (nearly 7 years).
The problem with rear projectors is the limited field of view - sit anywhere but straight ahead and the picture loses definition rapidly with every degree you move off centre.
without realising it - I think I'm becoming a bit of a TV buff. :x

Those are the "el cheapo" ones that satelite installers use.
The real deal are these.

I've installed them all around my house! I have 1 external FM antennae serving 5 stereos with minimal signal loss to the one furthest away from the source.

Well HD mode doesn't really happen in the UK yet! About 5 channels on SKy digital which are HD, and you need a £400 digi box to view them! But the future is HD
THe old rear projector did suffer from screenburn too...but the new DLP TVs don't! The plasmas and the rear projectors all used the phospho dye on the screen. And that used to degrade to give screenburn. But the DLPs use mirrors I think. And the viewing angle on new rear projector are pretty good.
Also with the DLPs you can change the bulb yourself! THey tell ya how in the instruction manual!
So 3.5 year expectancy for plasmas...hmmmm....so what happens after that?Just stops working?
There is a 60'' LG plasma HD in Dixons which is amazing. Stand right up to it and it is as sharp as....umm....something really sharp, £8000 though
This is ours

Ain't that the troof........ However would you of bought a crimper just to do your house ?
I have just whacked up a loda foam dielectric up to my dish & that has given me a 20% signal boost, that will do me ....... The old stuff amazingly enough was going brittle allready ....... That was a supprise ...... I thought Sky's quality standards would be better than that ......... Anyways I'm done playing antenna man for quite some time now, I got so bored with jiggling with my motorised setup I have sold it . I didn't even bother to help the dude that bought all the stuff set it up ;)
Geebers it was windy & cold up at that gable end ......... Just to make matters worse my sat finder's batt's carped out on me at the wrong moment ......... Ahh twas fun :t

Ahh twas fun :tas far as I know: SKY's installers are mostly self-employed sub-contractors that are s'posed to buy their gear from BSkyB! that means that if they can buy cheaper from other sources, they can make bigger profits.
End users don't usually know the difference in quality as long as the system is working after the install is completed. ;)
20% is a huge improvement! I may re-run my satelite cables (we have two STB's here) when the weather gets warmer. :t

Ohh ...............
I used Webro WF100 & I got it from HERE (http://www.satcure.co.uk/accs/page8.htm) Quite a long way down the page, I didn't need a 3Km reel ;) so I found this place the easiest ............ They ain't cheap but they don't sell carp & if you ask a question they tend to know the answer......... Which these days is a freakin miracle ;)

I've got those too although I didn't install them. I ran seperate lines to all our tv's and the cable guy came out and installed compression fittings on all the lines and installed some high quality splitters for me. Also got RG-11 cable installed to the house for our drop. :t
