After the bios checks IDE devices I get:
Floppy disk(s) fail (40)
What exactly does this mean and/or how do I fix it.

Shnikey Mntsnow 11-21-1999, 03:24 PM It means either you dont have the cable hooked up correctly, dont have the power cable hooked up correctly, dont have the settings in the BIOS set correctly or you have a defective floppy drive /forum/frown.gif Mntsnow shnikey 11-21-1999, 04:30 PM Is it possible the floppy drive is too old? It is really old, like 7-8 years. I know I connected it right. I checked four times. Shnikey DUSTYRUN 11-21-1999, 05:12 PM the floppy can be connected wrong. i just did a comp and had the ribbon backwards. it might be that it isnot seated all the way in. usually with a floppy it is something simple.to be on the safe side check your bios and see if it lists your floppy. good luck Dustyrun Mntsnow 11-21-1999, 05:49 PM With floppies being so cheap if there is ANY thoughts that it might be defective (unless it is KNOWN to be good) I would replace it. make sure when you have plugged in both the ribbon cable and power cable that you are fully seated and have not missed 1 row of pins or the cable is reversed (as some floppys are not "keyed") and again double check your settings for the floppy in the BIOS Mntsnow Axel 11-22-1999, 11:43 AM After checking that you didn't accidently reverse the ribbon cable, I'd have to agree with Mntsnow - spend the $30 to get a brand new floppy drive, and buy a new ribbon cable with it. Chances are, the new drive will have a faster access speed. This is probably the cheapest component in your system besides the CPU fan. You'll need it to load drivers as well as clean booting your system. I.E. - this is not the place to penny pinch. shnikey 11-22-1999, 08:36 PM I think it is bad, I'll go get one of those superdisk drives. Shnikey SysOpt.com
