I just did a clean reinstall of win 98 on my wife's machine. It is a k6 200 system o/c to 225 on a Biostar TX motherboard /Ali chipset, w/ 64 mb ram, and an Opti soundcard. There are no 98 drivers on Opti's site, or I"d have already tried that, so I used the opti drivers on the 98 cd. The system will run perfect for usually two or three hours, sometimes longer, and then out of the blue explorer.exe will crash, and when details is clicked, it says mmsystem.dll caused the crash. Any advice on fixing this would be appreciated, I don't want to reinstall 98 again, I just got it back up to par...heh

Hi Hotrod

mmsystem.dll is a C:\Windows\System file, so try SFC (Start Menu, Run, sfc) and replacing it from your Win98 disk.

An alternative would be to visit http://solo.abac.com/dllarchive/M.html where this file is also located, and downloading/installing it into your C:\Windows\System.

Hope this helps! /forum/smile.gif

Try putting this line in the system.ini file under the [mmsystem] heading
StackFrames=20

See if that helps

Thanks to both of you for the advice, I will try these tips and see what happens this afternoon, however, Aaron, I looked in my computer here at work, and could not find a heading in system.ini called mmsystem, and don't remember seeing it at home. Is it a heading you add somewhere if it's not there? I have a mmsystem heading under the boot section....

[boot]
oemfonts.fon=vgaoem.fon
system.drv=system.drv
drivers=mmsystem.dll power.drv
shell=Explorer.exe
user.exe=user.exe
gdi.exe=gdi.exe
sound.drv=mmsound.drv
dibeng.drv=dibeng.dll
comm.drv=comm.drv
mouse.drv=mouse.drv
keyboard.drv=keyboard.drv
*DisplayFallback=0
fonts.fon=vgasys.fon
fixedfon.fon=vgafix.fon
386Grabber=vgafull.3gr
display.drv=pnpdrvr.drv
SCRNSAVE.EXE=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\THE60'~2.SCR

and then another entrance under the drivers section...

[drivers]
wavemapper=*.drv
MSACM.imaadpcm=*.acm
MSACM.msadpcm=*.acm
VIDC.YVU9=IYVU9.DLL
VPM=ATIVTVPM.DLL
wave=mmsystem.dll
midi=mmsystem.dll
voice=C:\BITWARE\is101.drv

and that's all I can find. Thanks in advance..

Add the line any where in the system.ini file
