My stepson has an Older Acer Aspire with a 75mhz( don`t laugh).I`ve been trying to get the sound to work. Thinking it was the old sound card I replaced it with a too new card that the system can`t handle.I decided to put the original card back in --it recognizes it but when I try to play a cd it says" can`t find Audiosta.exe file. I can`t find it either. Where is it?

A few things come to mind - They all hinge on you having win95 or 98 loaded on the PC -

reboot the computer into safe mode - power it down, the second you see <starting windows 95> on the screen - hit your F8 key at the top of the keyboard and you should get a menu that allows you to go into safe mode - This will alter your screen settings - don't panic - it'll go away on your next reboot.

get into device manager ( settings - control panel - system - device manager ) - go into <sound - video & game controlers> - if the sound card you took out is still there, click on it and remove it. There's a chance the program will stop looking for that file.

If that doesn't work, you might try finding the drivers for the old sound card ( i.e. the floppy disks if you got them ), then make sure to remove the old card from that same list.

reboot your computer, and it should auto-detect that there is a card there and ask you for the driver.

Have your windows 95 CD handy as well, as the system may ask for it.

If the system doesn't see the card on boot, get back into control panel and do an add hardware, allow the system to auto-detect the card - if you have a floppy, install off the floppy instead of allowing win95 to install it's own generic drivers.

Last thing you might do is identify the old sound card, surf to the manufacturer's web site, and download the latest driver for the card.

Send us a note with all the markings off the old card, and hopefully we can help you identify it.

You might get lucky and find a new driver on the ACER web site. Typically, their tech support is really slow - took 3 days for them to help me with a CD-ROM issue last time I worked with them.
