Cat 5e youanswered a remote control question. Yoe wrote that it needs host software running on a computer to be connected to.

I have that problem, only I am an unwilling participant with the software running on my computer. I am ready to get another computer if I cannot disable the software. Is it a simple matter of unchecking the boxes in win98 misconfig file.

there are 3 devices in the configsys tab with 3 checks inboxes before thelines

1)device=C:\Windows\himem.sys.
2)DEVICE=C:\Windows\setver.exe.
3)device=C:\CDDRV\nec.ide.sys./D:mscdoo1/p/fo,14/p.170.15

in the Autoexec.bat tab
rem-By Windows Setup-C:\Windows\Command\MSCDEX
6boxes with checks I took 5 out that I thought pertained to me
1)Set Path= C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\Zone Alarm\Mail Frontier%Path%
2)Set tvdump flags=8
3)Settvdumpflags=8
$)Settvdump flags=8
5)Settvdumpflags=8
6)Settvdumpflags=8 >all of the set tvdumpflags=8 I removed the checks
I now think thay may be trying through the temporary internet files to create new files.

Is there anyway to disable this soft ware?
I also have tried to take the checks off the Client for microsoft networks and microsoft family logon- they come back.

Also I tried to remove the check that allow netbios application to run over TCP/IP

I would appreciate any advice you can offer.

Thankyou jean33

This is how your Config.Sys should look like:

device=C:\Windows\himem.sys.
device=C:\CDDRV\nec.ide.sys./D:mscdoo1/p/fo,14/p.170.15

This is how your Autoexec.bat should look like:

rem-By Windows Setup-C:\Windows\Command\MSCDEX
Set Path= C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\Zone Alarm\Mail Frontier%Path%

the MSCDEX is really optional, you wont need it if you are not using the CD in DOS

Also, these 2 files has nothing to do with any alledge Remote Control software at all.

you should look for things loading from:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\Run
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Run

and delete the entire key for:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion\RunOnce
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\RunOnce

Install and run Microsoft AntiSypare, it can detect all Remote Control software.
also install and run Spybot Search and Destroy http://www.safer-networking.org/

Without Host Software the remote control can not work.

As AllGamer said, none of the components on your list as to do with Remote Control Software.

The Remoter Control Software that I usually recommend (Ultr@VNC) does not install anything in StartUp. It installs an icon that you double click to start the Host, and when you done and close the Host it is Out of the System.

What about the set path below the set path for zone alarm

Set tvdumpflags=8 Originally ther were 2lines when I took out the checkmarks 3more identical lines appeared at a later date. Ever heard of something that technical tvdumpflags=8.

Also I cannot change netbios application overTCP?IP the checkmark will not changeI have no access to it.If I try to remove the checks from Client for Microsoft Networks or microsoft family logon they return despite a reboot over and over again.

I am releived if i have no remote software on my machine. But why are there 2 internet explorers in the add remove of control panel. Why are files accessed on dates that I have never accessed them ever.

It even says on the system id that I am the user the network is a workgroup.
A proffessional technical group installed a used different hard drive on my computer
I have access to manywindows office software programs that i did not request.
Aside from removing the network card what do you suggest ?

Thankyou for your interest and information it is greatly appreciated.

Would removing the network card solve the problem? If so would windows reload?

Hello, I wrote a response to your answers yesterday on the previous thread. I just remembered another problem. I wonder if you could tell me if this is as it should be as well.

When I log on to my mail if I open up outlook express or microsoft outlook I can view my mail there as well. These are programs that I did not request but were added by repair techs.

As I said in reponse my computer is named USER workgroup is called workgroup. Also why would there be a set path below thezone alarm set path Originally there were 2lines with checkmarks when i removed the checks 3more lines appeared months later. settvdumpflags=8 is a rather unusual technical phrase to say the least.

If i removed the network card would that then give me some control over client for microsoft networks and family logon because now I cannot remove the checks nor can I remove the check to disable netbios over TCP/IP. It looks to me that I am not the network administrator of a net work . There are numerous other examples that I have encountered where I am unable to alter settings. That leads me to beleive that I am not in control of my computer.
Thankyou again for your interest and help. Jean33

If this is not your PC, we can't help. Are you at work?

What is the Windows version?

I sent it to a tech repair they installed me on a network despite my telling them that I wanted to make sure I would have privacy.

Should I uninstall the network card I want nothing to do with a network.

On one of your other threads you mention DCHP what is it? When I try to disable it it asks for the w98 disk which I dont have..

Just go into Network properties and set the Primary logon to "Windows Logon" and you're done. You can't be on any network unless you are logging on with Client for Microsoft Networks.

Don't be paranoid. No one is trying to mess with your PC.

BTW - there's nothing stopping you from uninstalling Microsoft Office. It's in Add/Remove Programs.

You can also clear both AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS safely.

How is it possible to disconnect for good from a network. Is it wise ti remove the network card. Will windows beable to reload easily.

I am a home user who took a computer to a tech repair co. It was loaded with a different drive and I am on their network. I cannot alter some commands because I am not the network administrator. Any suggestions on how to regain some privacy?

Thanks Jean 33

have the Admin disable or remove the device, as removing it yourself may lead to warnings or errors on startup.

Hmmm...

you can remove the network card safely, if you want to do so.

but removing the network card might be a bad idea, if you use Cable/DSL internet.

Like BipolarBill said, you just need to switch to Windows Logon

in fact you can dissable and uninstall all Windows Networking if you have nothing else to connect to.

Windows 98 has no ability to lock you out of anything.

If some commands are not working, then chances are they got lost, deleted, or simply missing the path in Autoexec.bat

When I type dcomcnfg in the run box I get a notice that cannot find the file dcomcnfg or one of its components are missing.
I am not even able to click it on in the help section of windows 98.
When DCOM is enabled the machine can send requests using DCOM and receive them from other computers ,a tan enables a remote connection.

When disabled the machine can neither send a request using DCOM or receive from other computers.

What are the odds that that funtion would be inaccessable if it were not intentional.

Is there anyway to access this funtion. I do seem to have a C\ command window in dos available. I do not have the 98 disc available to me. If I could get one is there a way to reload and have those files available to me.

Thanhs

DCOM is only used for software that are related usually to Networking or Internet.

DCOM can not be dissabled / enabled, it's always there is part of the OS.

the only thing you can do with DCOM is to assign permission to certain programs to have more Permission or not to what it can do or not do.

if your DCOM is damaged, you can re-install it from the Win98 SE CD, it's a separate installation in Win 95/98, forgot the filename, but it was something XXXXdcom.exe

it was distribuited as a patch, you should be able to find it at Microsoft.com hopefully if that has not been removed from their website yet.

but if you are not going to be using any software like Internet Explorer, or check your emails, then, there's no need for DCOM.

You told me to look for software for remote vieing of my computer starting with
HKEY well I found them in RUN/regedit.
Six to be exact 1) HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
2)HKEY_CURRENTUSER
3)HKEY_LOCALMACHINE
4)HKEY USERS
5)HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG
6)HKEY_DYN_DATA

each has a + in a box beside it infront of it plus a little yellow folder in front of it. Any ideas on how I can get rid of this safely.

Also in add/remove programs there is a microsoft data access components KB810669 Can this be anything to do with it and can it be removed safely.
I have logged on under windows and removed most of checks from microsoft client network and family logon but the net bios keeps returning. on reboot in dos I see netbios softweare version4.5

Also is there any way to diable msdospromt in startup of win98 second edition
there is a place to check msdos programs from detecting windows wil that help?

There are constantly new items in msconfig startuo that i did not put there I unchech them.

If I cant get rid of them I will get rid of this computer.

Any advice is greatly appreciated
thankyou jean33

There are constantly new items in msconfig startuo that i did not put there I unchech them. That means your PC is contaminated.

http://www.sunbelt-software.com/CounterSpy.cfm

http://www.free-av.com/

Use them!

You don't belong in the Registry unless you want to reinstall Windows.

I'm going to ask you *one more time* to stay in your thread. Do not start new threads on the same subject and do not put names in your subject lines. If you do it again, I'm going to ban your account for two weeks.

You might have it easier if you would know the correct terminology.

Remoter Control Programs to control computers are good things that are use by thousands of professionals.

What you have on your computer is probably Spyware, Viruses, and Trojans.

You need to run few programs that would clean your computers and then install Firewall, Anti Spyware, and Antivirus applications to protect your computer in the future.

May be this can Help, Basic Steps in cleaning Internet "Junk". (http://www.ezlan.net/clean.html)

I agree with Cat5

it sounds more like a SPAMware or Virus in the system.

Install a Good antivirus software like the AVG mentioned above, or Avast!

http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
and
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

both are free, make sure you have the latest virus definition, using the Update option from the antivirus software.

then run what Bill suggested to fight the Spyware and SPAMware in your PC

http://www.sunbelt-software.com/CounterSpy.cfm
and

She'll have a hard time with MS AS because it doesn't support Win98. Counterspy does though.
