My parents got a compaq presario ( i dont know what model) with a k6-2 500 mhz, 64mb ram. 10+ hd, etc. The computer came with internet service (AT&T AtHome) through a cable modem. Every time they logon it locks up for about 5-10 min. Same thing when they try to logoff. Also, they have not been able to turn off the computer properly. They have had the following probs: goes black, comes back on, goes black, comes back on; or freez up solid; or throw some weird error out. I cannot get down there until sunday to check it out, so I wanna ask you guys if you have any ideas as to how to solve either of these problems. My parents said the the powering off issue did not occur until the cable modem, software, and configuration was all done and installed.

Any ideas?

other then it being a generic trouble caused
by the install itself...
possible there is a trouble with the bindings
on the adapter card...
so from a dos prompt have them type

IPCONFIG/release_all
IPCONFIG/renew_all

so if this helps

It is NOT and i repeat not a problem with the cable modem or the cable modem software. It is an OS problem, contact microsoft. I absolutely know for sure, i work in tech support for cable modems via RoadRunner and there is nothing they can do about it. Trust me.

okay..it is model 5461 presario, and i have just spent the last two hours on the phone with the techs becaause it would not connect at all this morning. well, nothing was set at all in the adapter card props so we set them and now i can connect. but there is still intermittent lock-up with getting to sites and whenever I go on a hash file is placed on the desktop. The tech said that it is not @home doing this (AT&T @home is the ISP for my parents). I have the following running when i hit ctrl-alt-del:
@home
backweb agent
explorer
sccenter
vsstat
em_exec
avconsol
tgsched
cpqeadm
motmon
systray
vshwin32
bttnserv
webscanx

Is there any of these that might be causing the hash file to placed on the desktop and what can safely kill without disturbing @home or the OS???

tgsched looks suspicious and might be trying to run something automated.

webscanx looks like web anti-v software, something that used to be a whole lot of trouble in the past and shut down connections left and right as an html page would write to a swap file due to size.

Backweb client is push technology that continues an upgrade download over several sessions on-line. If a site's content changed and they never finished downloading, it might still be trying to get something that isn't there anymore. This is compaq's way of pushing upgrades and driver fixes without the user always knowing.... The technology is pretty impressive, but the backweb company just had their IPO of stock in June. I imagine they're still working out a few bugs. I believe you can safely kill it.

Give that a shot and see what happens. I'd also check the browser setting and see what they have selected for their home site, might be something as simple as a bad link. < probably not, but simple to check.

for cable modem service, you have to have at least 80% free resources for it to work properly. Also, if that does not work, download the newest version of your browser and that should take care of the problem
