Hi
When i boot my PC, in the morning or if it has been off for an hour or two, it will boot to windows 98 but will freeze about 10 minutes into it and when i restart it will freeze on bootup. I take it this is a heat problem? If I take the case cover off and put a indoor room fan facing it it will go on forever so I have an idea it could be heat. What I want to know is if it will be the CPU? or something eles. Spec is below;

P2 350 (Intel H/Fan)
Creative Banshee 16Mb (No fan)
ABIT BX6 R1 board
128 PC100 RAM
INWIN ATX case

it sure sounds like heat from what you discribe. are you sure that the heatsink fan is NOT turning off or slowing down prior to the lockup? I would suggest changing which fan header you are plugging into to rule out that your fan is not shutting off or slowing down. (it is a known fact on the bx6-2 boards when using the "fan1/cpu" header and the termister or on-chip temp that the fan can change speeds according to what temp it reads. (supposed to get faster when hot and slowwer when cool) I prefer to have the fan run full speed all the time.

CPU fans are usually about $12 - get one that never shuts off,I.E., doesn't jack into the mobo, but is powered off a power cable extender. Then spend another $4 and get some canned air. Blow out your power supply with it. Make sure your ribbon cables aren't blocking the air-flow through your system. Pull those out of the way with tie-downs ( plastic tie downs - DON'T! use the wire ties off bread bags )

Another thing to consider is, if pets and/or kids aren't a concern - leave the case off the CPU - you shouldn't need it.

Lastly - sad but true - the damage may be done. If the above doesn't work, and you've tried a better heat sink on the chip, and you aren't over-clocking it to the max - it's time to go shopping for a new chip.
