Can anyone help me with Bios updating?
I have a Award Bios 4.51PG and a Motherboard from Micronics. it is a p 100 Hz.
I want to install a 15 GB Harddrive. can somebody give me a tip
First thing would be to surf the Micronics homepage and see if they list BIOS update files on their site. - Download the one specifically for your motherboard type. Place one copy where you can easily find it on your hard drive, and another copy on a boot-able floppy.
Check your motherboard manual to see if you need to change a jumper setting on your board to "flash" your EPROM with a new BIOS.
You'll find flash instructions and programs on the AWARD/Pheonix home page if they aren't on the Micronics home page already. Download and print these for reference.
You're probably asking " all I want is to add a bigger hard drive ", The reason I'm telling you all of the above is that the particular version of AWARD bios is not Y2K and you'll run into problems in 39 days.
Another piece of advice - ALWAYS opt to save a copy of the old BIOS and place it both on the hard drive and on the boot floppy. If the new one doesn't work out, you can always go back to the old one and roll the date back to 1972 to make it work.
After you've downloaded that and checked your motherboard manual( if you lost it, or your dog used it for roughage, the Miocronics page might have download copies available - Print it out before you start anything) then you're ready to access the BIOS/CMOS set-up upon boot and adjust the BIOS to support your new large hard drive.
Don't skip anything - short-cuts here spell disaster!!!
And don't let this seemingly lengthy process overwhelm you. You can do it, just make sure you read your m/b manual carefully and don't start this process until you have at least 4 hours of quiet, unhurried time blocked out when you can do this in peace.
