I have a Packard Bell 300cd. I installed a Quantum Bigfoot Cy HD. While I had it apart I took the fan out of the power supply and cleaned it. I also cleaned the fan on case. When I put it all together and plugged it in nothing happens. It's like the power supply is dead. I checked the fuse and that is o.k. What could it be?

Kinda hate to ask this, and I don't mean to offend you in any way, but I've done some pretty bone-headed stuff in my day, so I'll ask you anyway just in case.....
Did you happen to take the PS all the way out of the case, or just take the fan out without removing all of the wires?
If you took the PS all the way out of the machine (disconnecting it completely), its possible that you did not re-install the wires on the on/off switch correctly when you put the PS back in the machine. Double check your re-installation. Look for the most obvious things first.....
-is the power cord plugged into the wall?
-if using a power-strip, is it turned on?
-are all of your wires connected correctly?
-PS fuse ok? (guess you already looked there)
-breaker or fuse for the house ok?
-etc, etc.........
Its a start.....

I checked all that and I have power all of the way past the fuse. When I turn on the switch I about 1amp on the 6volt side and nothing on the 12v side. Is my power supply fried and if it is could there be something I did fry it?

Is this a standard at power supply? If so, I have a pile of used ones that work in my garage. (they don't work in my garage, they work and are stored in my garage ha ha) If you can borrow one from a friend, see if you can turn it on. If yours is bad, email me. I'll ship you a used one for the shipping charges...

You didn't really say if your PS is a standard AT type or an ATX style.
IF its an AT style, you can tell because there are two PS connectors that plug into the motherboard. If its a single connector, then you have an ATX style PS.
For the AT style connectors when you plug them back into the motherboard, make sure that the black wires in the connector for each plug are such that when installed, they are orientated in the center of the recepticle on the motherboard. This will ensure that you have the PS hooked up to the motherboard correctly.

Hi Target,
I have the AT type power supply. It's hooked to the mother board the right way. I checked the wires before I plugged them back into the motherboard. The voltage was correct. Could I have lost the bios or something like that. I have been reading the other Posts on here and was wondering about what and how the bios works and what flashing the bios means. Thanks for the reply I know it's hard to help someone if your not there. I work on cars and people want me to tell them what's wrong with them without being there. It's almost impossible to hit the problem the first time.

Thanks everyone for the help. I had the cables to the hdd and floppy and the cd-rom hooked up backwards. Duh a rookie for sure. Do I want to set my new hard drive to slave? I want to put Linux on one and keep windows on the other can I do this?

Thanks SC for the offer. I found that I pinched the wire for the fan when i put it back together. I fixed that and checked the output. Everything seams fine with the power supply. NOW when I turn on the computer the power light and the hd light come on but thats about it. The floppy doesn't try to work. I think the processor is trying to work because it warms up. I know this because the front cooling fan is not working.
