I've been reading threads on here and guides / help files elsewhere about setting up remote pc control either through Remote Desktop or through some other software solution. I have a question concerning this that I haven't been able to find. Is it possible to set up remote control without having access to a router on either end?

From what I've read, I should be able to connect without having access to the router on the client end since I could use a web interface, but would it be possible without access on the host end?

no you can not
you will need to have access to the router to configure the port forwarding required

Is possible to set the remote control software to use a port that's already open?

You cannot connect to a computer in "Vacuum" Remote control program needs Host software running on the computer to be connected to.

By default, a Routers closes all the ports so there is No way in. A port is opened if there is a request from the inside, or if it configured by the user to stay open.

Many newer Routers can be managed from the outside but the user has to know how to set it up so that it can be managed from the outside.

Remote Control programs have to works through defined ports (you can choose which ones, but they have to be configured ahead), and these ports have to be opened through the Router.

Example, Ultr@VNC - Installation, and Settings. (http://www.ezlan.net/vnc.html)

all the known Remote software i've used requires some sort of registry changes on the Host (destination) machine before it can listen on another port.

so... even if the port is already open, and you manage to install it remotely some how, you wont be able to connect to it unless the port and software listen on the right place.

the only software i know that can be Remotely installed is PcAnywhere, but it runs on ports that are NEVER open by default, on any firewall/router.

Well I don't want to install the software remotely, I just won't be able to configure the router. So I was thinking that if I configure the software to use, say, port 80 which is typically open for http, would that work? I've never used software and admit that I haven't installed it and played around with it yet, so I could be talking about a software option that doesn't exist.

I did install the beta pcAnywhere 12, but even with the help program I couldn't figure out how to configure it. I have my host computer listening for a connection and I set a username & password, but it also asks for a domain, but I'm not on a domain, so I don't know.

Port 80 is Not open through a Router.

No Port is Opened by default.

Router open port to incoming only if it was first requested on the LAN Side.

If a Router has the capacity to be managed from the outside a special port and password have to be established first from the inside.

If the way you phrase it has a sound solution, then No Network would be secure from Internet Hacking.

May be if you would explain your actual goal to access the computer some one would come with a better idea.
