Trying to fix a computer that freezes when it gets to the windows 95 start-up screen. Doesn't matter if system is hot or cold. It goes through all steps until it starts windows then just freezes. I would think it was totally windows if it would let me re-format hard drive. It doesn't let that happen either. Any ideas?

Have you been able to get into WIN through safe mode? Check the Control Panel once in there and see how all the devices look.

Sounds like an IRQ conflict. Try removing all your PCI and ISA cards. Keep only your video card. See if you can get into windows. Add one card at a time until you find the problem. If this doesnt solve the problem, try reseating your RAM, processor, etc... Why can't you format? Dont need windows for that.

I can't get to windows even in safe mode, tried booting with floppy and no go. Also on the format subject, it lets me get to the proceed and lose all data screen but when I continue on there is no hard drive movement at all, it locks up. Finally I did what I should have done in the first place, I put all the components in my computer and it worked just fine. I suspect a bad MB, any thoughts?

Have you tried removing the battery to drain the CMOS? I did this to a computer that would freeze right after the memory count. It's worth a try before you go and buy a new mother board I hope it works for you.

I had the same problem and traced it to McAfee anti-virus. I uninstalled and all is well. I put in Norton and have no problems.
(Celeron 466/Tyan MB dma 66 & pc133/ IBM HDD)
I didn't have a HDD lock-up tho..
Good luck...
