Hi everybody !

At my office my computer is behind a firewall, and it´s blocking the download of some files (exe, mov, avi, etc), i am mainly concerned with exe files, because i´m trying to get some demo software from some sites.

I have searched and found that i can only download exe files from www.download.com, maybe it is because of the protocol they use to transfer files, but of course not everything i look for, is available there.

So i ihave two questions :
1. Does anybody know why i can download exe´s from www.download.com and if theres others soft sites using the same "protocol"?

2. Is there a service or software that compresses a given file online before downloading to my PC, i mean converting the exe to zip and then, download?

thanks for your good advice and sorry for my english

You need to go to your network admins and have them configure this out.
I don't know if you're using a monitoring program like Websense....port filtering/blocking, blacklist/whitelist, access lists in your hardware, etc.

The powers that be have allowed access to download.com and that's it.
They either need to open more up to you, or you need to prove to them and/or your supervisor your need for these software programs, and the admins can download them for you....

I'm sure there are blocks/filters in place and for very good reasons.

Without any prison gaurds...the inmates run the asylum...

thanks dajogejr, you´re right about your last statement :) , i think i´ll ask the admins to download what i need for, but I still doubt they have something to do with the download.com thing, all the same i still wonder if there´s a way to compress files before downloading.

No...
But, there are downloading tools that look for more than one mirror and allow multiple portions of that file to be downloaded from different sources at the same time...

Download Accelerator comes to mind...but, last I remember, that had some spyware/adware bundled in it. It's been years since I used that....so, BUYER BEWARE....

Since you are not an admin at your work, I'd be quite sure they have something to do with the download.com thing.

I use Websense at my work to filter/monitor all Internet traffic...which, works quite well I might add.

Never liked Download Accelerator due to the spyware - the same goes for Realplayer. Along the same lines "Getright" gets the job done without unwanted tag-along installs. I can't speak for the current version but I'm using ver 4.5e. Here is a source for older versions:
http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=getright

There's old versions of other freely distributed programs at this site. Newer is not always better.

yep....it USED to be good before that...:)

However, I use Firefox browser with a download tweak that does basically the same thing....
