At my work we have a small LAN 8 pcs mostly running W2K, server running W2k advanced server. I am installing a DSl modem to the server added a second NIC and as I was installing the software for the DSL modem it had a connectivity problem. It failed 2 ping tests but passed the DNS resloution test. I could not access a web page through IE 6. Tech support could not help out. I moved the modem to a standalone XP machine that we use for dialup access and the modem worked great, no problems at all. Was able to ping. I would rather set up the modem and router on the server.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks in advance!

Is the server firewalled? Have you tried using INETWIZ?

there isn't any firewall on the sever and no i have not. Do I have to download INETWIZ or is already on the server?

you mean you're going to use your server as a router? You should get a firewall program (server ones ain't cheap) or use a separate router instead, like a linksys or dlink. exposing your server to the internet is risky business.

MK is right, you should definitely spend the $50 and get a decent router, at the minimum.

I have a router...Lynksys but need to get the DSL modem working first, right?
Ok I ran INETWIZ - selected "connect using LAN"
Nothing checked for proxy server since I don't have any and thats what ISP wants
setup email account i checked yes
Use existing email account "in.epix.net" i selected yes
Accept settings i selected yes
clicked finish
I then double clicked IE and IE came up with page cannot be displayed.
I am running W2K Advanced Server SP 2
IE is ver 6.0.2600.0000IS
The NIC attached to the DSL modem is a Lynksys EG1032 instant gigabit and is set to obtain IP addresses and DNS.
I don't know what else to do.
Don't worry guys I plan to install a router between the DSL modem and the server.

you need to power off the dsl modem when you switch between the PCs and the router.
when you have the pc connected to the modem, what IPs are you getting? are you getting a DNS server IP?
you can look at the dsl connection from the linksys control panel also, which is how you will eventually be setting it up anyway.
what does your ISP support say? are you using PPPoE?

I don't have the router setup yet. I believe its PPoE. The ISP had me type the IP address of the DSL modem in the URL address bar. They said the modem is configured properly because I can connect and disconnect. I don't know what IP addresses I am getting will have to look today for that.
Is there any other way I can set this modem and router up say like to the uplink port of my hub will that work? I just didn't want to load all the software for the router on the server and then have this same problem plus the softeware for the router says i need to have internet access anyway. Just some of my thoughts.

Who is the ISP?

don't put a hub or switch between the router and the modem. there is a dedicated port on the router to go to the modem.
you don't need internet access to use the router's control panel. by default, linksys uses 192.168.1.1 with a blank username and "admin" as the password.
you need to know for sure if it is PPPoE or not. go to CAT5E's site for more help.

I got it to work!!!
After I did an ipconfig /all, I needed to put the IP address of the DSL modem into the default gateway of the LAN NIC. When I did that I was able to get internet access. Where was my head at....DUH!!!!!
I guess the Techie at the ISP could care less. All he was worried about was that the modem was configured correctly.
They are using PPoE.
Didn't think this was rocket science.
Now time to setup the router.
Thanks everyone for all your help!!!
