I tried updating my modem driver, I have a ZOOM PCI Fax Modem. Well, it was a mistake. I thought I found the correct driver, but there are a lot of confusing options at the ZOOM site and evidently I got the wrong one, or just didn't need a new one. Anyway, I got the modem working ok, except that it used to be on COM4 and now its on COM3. Now I'm crashing occasionally while using IE5, I think I have a conflict with my mouse.
What is the easiest way to change my modem back to COM4 where it was working fine.
Thanks for any help,
Chainsaw
p.s. I should know this, but somehow I have a mental COM block or something, thanks for understanding.

That's a winmodem, right?
There should be an Icon in the Control Panel just for the Zoom configuration. See if you can change it in there.

It's a Zoom 56K PCI Faxmodem, (as far as I know, that's not a Winmodem)I don't know the model number because it came with my computer and all ZOOM references say "Look on the box for the Model Number", that has been part of the problem that I've had in determining the correct ZOOM drivers. It came with a CD ROM and those are the drivers I'm using now. I think now that the drivers I have are fine, it's just the COM port that is messing me up. I do have a modem icon in the Control Panel and it indicates that it is COM3, but I don't see any way to change it there. I'm fairly sure I need to do it at the Device Manager or by removing/adding New Hardware. Maybe I'll just remove it then let windows find it again. My IE5 problems could be unrelated I suppose, but it seems to have happened after the snafu with the drivers.
It's PCI, so chances are it's a winmodem. What IRQ is it using? Another member had a similar problem. If it's IRQ is being shared with any other device change it to a free IRQ, usually in the 10-12 range. Good luck...

Susan & Eli,
You may well be right that it's a Winmodem, the invoice that I have for the computer lists it as:
MODEM 56K/ZOOM PCI 1120-02-15L
I know that it has a Lucent chip which helps in the driver selection, but again, I'm at a slight dissadvantage without the box.
It's currently installed at COM3 IRQ9
The Device Manager indicates that there are "no conflicts".
I'm really thinking that my problem is not related to my modem at all.
I just did a warm boot and got the following Explorer message: (I've been getting the same message at boot lately, but if I boot again, it boots ok)
EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in

Nothing wrong with the modem, or the com.
Run SFC, and extract kernel32.dll from the Windows CD. Should fix it up.

Comtech,
I can't wait to get home to my computer to give that a try, that error has been really bugging me for awhile now. It's been one of those subtle problems that really has been more of an inconvienience than anything else.
By the way, I understand that I need to extract the Kernell32.DLL file from my Windows 98 2nd CD, but I am not familiar with what SFC is. I've never extracted a single file from a Windows CD before.
Thanks,

If extracting a fresh kernel32.dll doesn't help, I'd still recommend changing the IRQ to a different one so that the modem has it's own. Winmodems can be really picky and can play nasty tricks on you. IRQ 9 on my system is used for the USB controller (I can only assume that your IRQs are similar for something like that). And if it doesn't help, you can always change it back.

As much as I had hoped, it didn't do the trick, so I went to Microsoft.com and did a search for the error message I am getting. The search for "EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL" notes that the solution is to delete all .pwl (password) files. Well, that didn't work. I tried going to the Device Manager and deleting the Modem then reinstalling per Add new hardware (I let Windows do the search and put the modem and fax where it wanted. (It put it at COM3 again) I don't know how to assign it to COM4 or I would do that instead.
I get the same error with Explorer as with IExplorer "EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in module KERNEL32.DLL at 017f:bff7a3d1." At least it's consistant.
Well, wish me luck, I'll keep trying till I figure it out, at least I'm not down entirely!
Thanks
