start a new file with the canvas in that size? Seems to me that this would be a gargantuan size file and would surely bog down my system. I'm creating a complex file (including a photo element) that will be used as a backdrop on a stage. Do i need to start with a canvas that size or can i use a smaller size canvas to be used on this banner?

Surely you can't print something that huge right? Can't you scale it down and give it to the proper place to have it made into a banner? Doing something that big would be very annoying lol especially if you plan on using the smudge tool.

Well you can create a smaller image but you have to make sure that when you blow it up to the desired size that it won't turn out pixelated. Becuase then you have wasted a ton of money and ink. You can usually create a pick with a resolution of 600 or so and when you blow it up you should still have pretty good quality. And good luck with that! :D

You need to use what's called an svg editor. Inkscape is a very good free editor. Adobe makes one as well, though the name escapes me...
