Ok, have a GA-586TX2 PCI-ISA BUS PENTIUM PROCESSOR MB.
166 pentium
64 megs ram
win 95
Problem I am having is when I boot into windows..(95)..it tells me windows did not detect a mouse. Well, the MB has no mouse port like the new Pentium II boards. So anyways (this older stuff is new to me) I was using or am using a Serial port adapter in an ISA slot. Pluging my serial mouse into this card which sits in an ISA slot. Card info: DATA TECHNOLOGY DTC2280. I was using it on an old 486. I pulled it out of the 486 and put it on the Pentium board but it doesn't detect anything from this card. The only other port on the MB for a mouse is for a ps/2 mouse. 4 prongs. is there some sort of adapter for a serial mouse to plug into that will run over to that connector on the MB???? If so what is it...if not, what I am using now?? And why isn't the mouse being detected now using the card I have in it.
HELP....
thanks

yes there is but you should also check in the bios for inable ps2 mouse if it is set for inable disable it and it should find the serial mouse if not
they do make the conecters for that ps2 port though you will need a mouse that is ps2 and or serial capable /forum/smile.gif

check the bios first then go to your local computer store tell them what mobo you have and the should beable to get you the set up with the right adapter /forum/smile.gif

I disagree with scotter on two points - there is typically only one adapter that alters serial to PS/2 and the store will probably have no idea about anything regarding your mother board unless they sold it to you and still have an old manual laying around ( very doubtful ).

A few questions -

What's on your other com ports that you have to go through an ISA com port for your serial mouse? Why not go off the com port ( typically COM1 or COM2 ) coming right off the board?

the $5 you'd spend on the adapter would be better spent just buying a ps/2 mouse in the first place - they usually don't run more than $10 anyway.

If com 1 & 2 are giving you trouble, while you're at the store, pick up a new set of plugs and replace the old ones coming off your system now. Last PC I built, I had to go through two old ribbon com port cables before finally deciding to buy a new set for $4 at the store and I never had another problem. I also bought a new ps/2 cable for my mobo at the same time and never went back to a serial mouse again.

Not there's anything wrong with serial mice, it's just that the new ATX form factor boards all seem to have ps/2 mouse connectors. Too many adapters make for more problems in my experience.
