Hi Guys (& other Gals),

I just installed XP Pro w/sp2 on a P4 PC. Clean install (not upgrade from another OS). Nothing else on PC 'cept OS!

Did a Windows Update and it installed a LOAD of patches, security updates, etc.

Quick question(s):

I looked in C:\Windows (with ALL files being shown (ie: hidden, system, compressed, etc.) and found the following and want to know if I can delete any/all of them??

In C:\Windows - there are 72 files with *.log (miscellaneous file names) but all of them ending with ext = ".log", 39 of them have KBnnnnnn.log as file name.

1 Hidden folder $hf_mig$ (492 files, 107 folders, 99.5MB) that contains 36 'main' folders (names=KBnnnnnn) that are also hidden.

1 Hidden compressed folder $MSI31Uninstall_KB893803v2$ (111 files, 1 folder, 5.30MB) that contains 102 files with names of regnnnnn. Plus some 'dll' files.

38 (hidden, compressed) folders with names of $NtUninstallKBnnnnnn$.

Thank you very much!

Sincerely,

Cin :-@

PS: Does this mean that everytime I update Windows it will create more of these hidden files?

Also in C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\ there are 2,507 files that take up 461MB, most of them are .dll files - are they also safe to delete??

Thank you very much!

Sorry no one responded but it is safe to delete of the $NtUninstallKBnnnnnn$ folders. I would not delete the other folders you mention. The log files can be deleted as well.

Good luck! :D

Note: I have merged your 2 threads with the same messages. Please do not double post, your questions will get answered it just takes a little time sometimes... :t

if you're sure you don't have problems with the patches, then you can delete them. The uninstalls are there just in case a patch causes issues in your system.

leave the dllcache alone. that is part of the windows file protection.

use ccleaner to clear out space instead.
