I just built a new amd k-6 2 450 machine and it runs programs fine, but it loads slow as hell. And i mean my p-200mmx is faster loading. I am only using 32 mb of ram right now, but more is on the way. Will it cause a big difference?

Well check what does the OS loads at boot time...if you are running win98 use the system configuration utility to enable or disable things that could slow you down or that aren't neccesary.
And defrag... sometimes defragmenting your HD make a big difference.

I have defragmented and run a scandisk, but it did no good. I am not sure what else to do except wait for the new ram, i have about 90% resources free. Thanks for the info though

check your bios and make sure your hard drive is set to user define and not auto..it makes a big difference in boot times and hard disk access..i knocked off a full minute on a 2:30 boot time on a gateway p-200

Well the first thing I would consider is what the Pentium 200 has to load compaired to the AMD 450....considering your only using 32 megs of ram on the AMD system and your probably using Win.98. Take a look at what the differences are. 1: Are you using a large HD, lots software, cd-rom/dvd, etc.
I would take into consideration that the RAM has alot to do with the loading time on the AMD system. Win 98 uses a minimum of 32 megs of Ram to run..... /forum/wink.gif

Actually, i dont knoew the speed of the ram. I got it a long time ago, but it is SDRAM, yes the system does see all of it.
i'm not sure about the cmos clocl, have to check
The system does 2 ram checks.
I have no antivirus program, but i know that i don't have any virus.
I get the new 8ns 64mb chip in wednesday, so i'll give the results then.
Thanks
Tell us more about the RAM - does the system "see" all of it on start-up. Most boot sequences list how much RAM they detect. - use the 'pause' key if that screen passes by too quick to see clearly.
Also - what speed is the RAM? 7-10 NS, or 60-70 NS? Are you sure your MOBO can handle that speed - especially if the RAM is 7-10 NS. Some boards can't handle anything under 60NS RAM, but will attempt to use the 10 NS with some of the results you are seeing.
Next, have you been having trouble with your clock - constantly needing to reset it? - you might have a bad CMOS battery.
Last thing that comes to mind - does your system do 3 RAM checks every time it boots? I've disabled my RAM checks down to only one within my BIOS settings which speeds things up upon boot.
One more thing - are you running an anti-virus package that you haven't updated the anti-virus definitions on in over a month? - Some older versions of Norton Anti-V hang for a time-out period during the boot sector start-up check because the virus definitions aren't current. - that, of course, also begs the question - do you have a virus messing up your system?

Okay, i got the 64 megs and that brings me to a total of 96 meg. Works great, now i just need to get the onboard AGP 3d working.
