I have an almost 2 yr. old HP Pavilion 8140 eith an M50 monitor and a mutimedia key bord. My question is .. what is the procedure for installing a head set mic. and ear phones? I have a connection on the left side of my keyboard with a pictue of head phones, and my thought is if I plug into this jack it should by pass my built in system. I can not get any info. from HP in fact since I have had the machine which is a lease, I have had almost no support. Please let me know if I connect to the keyboard if I will mess up my sound/mic. system.
Thanks Cliff.

Before we get too far into this - could you just kind-of elaborate on why you want to put a head-set w/ mic on your computer?

If it's for the internet telephone software, I'd say don't waste too much time. It's a neat idea, but they haven't ironed out all the technical issues.

If you are doing this to assist with a disability, then, by all means -

Best bet would be to go through a sound-card and by-pass the keyboard connections unless you need the cord length.

Next - a quick trip down to radio-shack for connectors is probably your best bet if you have to go through the keyboard. - Take the keyboard and head-set with you to match up the connectors.

As for your use of "bypass" - my HP multi-media keyboard terminates with 3 plugs - keyboard - head-phones - mic - which go into color-coded jacks on the CPU.

Are you worried you'll knock out the speakers?

Doubt if you'll damage anything unless you try to force the headphone jack into something it wasn't designed for(see radioshack for adapter) Otherwise, just try it and see what happens - worst case, you'll have to unplug & reboot.
