I finally had my first HD crash. My HD clicks and I get a Primary Master and Primary SLave failure at post. Could oc'ing have caused any of this? My initial idea is no but just wanted to get a concensus.

I have a K6-2 400 @ 450 on a Soyo 5EMA+. The hd in question is a Maxtor 7200 20GB running at 33ATA. My heatsink temp has hovered between 90 and 93 degrees F. I have not changed the FSB, only have changed the multiplier from 4.0 to 4.5 and voltage from 2.2 to 2.4. My dead hd is in the middle of three bays w/ the floppy above and a WD hd below (5400 13GB at 33ATA). I was about to order a cooler for the hd.

I plan to call Maxtor on Monday. I unfortunately don't still have the receipt so I don't know if they will give me another one. /forum/frown.gif We'll see. Please let me know if it was just dumb luck with a bad drive, something inherent w/ the Maxtor 7200 RPM drives, or my oc'ing. Thanks-Dave

Maxtor should take the drive back with no question. I just recently did an RMA on one with them through e-mail, without any kind of receipt. Just have the specs ready that are on the drive label including the HDA and PCBA numbers.

If you have some important information on the drive that you would like to copy off, you can try to put the drive on an IDE all by itself as master, boot to a floppy and try to get to C:

Thanks for the feedback on Maxtor. I hope to have the same ease in exchange. Unforunately I can't get anyhting off the drive. I don't have anything that was THAT important anyway that wasn't backed up on cd or zip. Thanks-Dave

Be very careful in following the instructions that Maxtor gives in returning the drive. I just got hozed by them for not using what the consider to be proper pakaging material! I got a RMA number and shipped it to them UPS using an anti-static hardrive cover, a layer of bubble-wrap, in a box filled with styrophome peanuts. Pretty much the same way most vendors ship drives. After about 3 weeks, Maxtor returned the deffective drive to me in a Maxtor shipping box with a foam cut out for the drive, saying that my waranty was voided because I didn't use foam! They stamped the drive in red: Waranty Void. The check sheet that they used had many other silly warranty voiding reasons available to be checked. They mades it pretty clear that they are pursuing a stratigy of trying very hard not to honnor their waranties.

They do make approved boxes available for $6. Seems like a lot for basically an empty box, but weighed against voiding the warrantee... I'd take it.

Well, I do still have the Maxtor box w/ foam inside. If they void that then there is really somehting wrong. /forum/smile.gif I hope everything does go smoothly with this. I am a bit skeptical.

The original box with the foam is what I used and it was fine.

I spoke to the Maxtor people and got an RMA for what turned out to be a dead IDE, not a dead drive, last month.
They describe the original box on a recording you get as far as shipping back to them goes.
But if you don't have that, it's a good idea to get one from them, or a local shop.

I've already replaced the drive and the WD that was a slve now works since I removed the bad Maxtor. The only thing is that I have to REINSTALL the DEAD drive and run a Maxtor utility on it to say what I already know. Oh well. I understand why they do it, I just wish I didn't have to do it myself. ...Enough griping out of me. I will just be happy to have a new 20GB drive! Thanks. Dave

I did not have to run any diagnostics on my RMA'd drive. Is that one of the requirements for you daveleau?

Unfortunately yes. I have to reinstall the drive, taking out one of my two good drives and run the proggie to say 'you were right, this...drive... is dead.'
