Which connection is faster?

Can someone help in clarifying which broadband is faster? I've been hearing alot that cable broadband is faster than dsl? I've also had some people tell me that dsl is a cleaner connection?? They said that dsl is your only connection, cable is shared by many in your neighborhood? Makes no sense to me??

Or is it mainly media hype and they both offer good broadband connection?
