You can download a utility from IBM that's called a Drive Fitness Test

Something else to think about is the cable you are using. Is it a new cable?
Is the drive itself SCSI or IDE?
There is a chance that the BIOS on your MOBO won't handle a drive of that size. You may need to upgrade it. Check out the MOBO manu. home page to see if they off an update for the BIOS.
Win95 and Win98 have different tolerances for hard drive space they will see and use.
Also, did you do anything special with the cluster sizes of the drive when you formated it? You may need to repartition the HD and alter the cluster size for Win95 to handle it.
Then there is always the chance you just got a bad drive.
Lastly, if the drive was used and came off an NT box, it might be running the NTFS file system or possibly FAT32.
