Two out of three times when I launch the browser(I have both IE5 and Netscape 4.7) the modem freezes up the system. Does anybody have any suggestions? Brangwen 11-11-1999, 10:39 PM Just a comment, as my sister is having a similar problem. She has a 450 PIII, WIN98se and a Aopen modem. When she clicks her mouse after launching the browser (IE5), the system freezes. Is your mouse involved at all when the system freezes 2 out of 3 times? Brangwen Eli 11-11-1999, 11:04 PM Possibly the modem is using the same IRQ as your mouse. If the modem's not a winmodem and it's set on COM 3, and you have a mouse on COM 1, try changing the modem to COM 4. Good luck... chuckiechan 11-11-1999, 11:25 PM Ditto what Eli said. My new rig required me to use a serial mouse instead of the PS2 (plug-in) port. My old one needed it in PS2 and didn't work in seriel port. alx098 11-12-1999, 01:01 AM Yes actually the mouse is envolved, however, the modem is connected to COM 4, so I don't think that's the reason. Mntsnow 11-12-1999, 01:33 AM It will be if your mouse is on COM2 /forum/biggrin.gif Com1 and Com3 share resources Com2 and Com4 share resources Mntsnow Switch to a ps/2 mouse if your motherboard supports it and your off to the races /forum/biggrin.gif alx098 11-12-1999, 05:02 PM Both my mouse and the keyboard are of PS/2 type, and COM1, COM2 are not even used. Any other suggestions? It might sound stupid, but could it be because of static electricity? Eli 11-12-1999, 09:38 PM Well if you're not using them at all, I would sugest completely disabling COM 1 and 2, just to rule out that idea. If it's a winmodem it could still be sharing an IRQ with some other device. Check to make sure that the IRQ your modem is using is not in use by ANYTHING else. Keep us posted... alx098 11-13-1999, 01:03 PM By the way, V770 is agp type. It looks like it's currently sharing it's IRQ (10) with your Viper 770. I've had winmodems on IRQ 12 before without problems. My current modem is a winmodem on IRQ 12 as a matter of fact (I just checked.) Good luck. pickel 11-13-1999, 10:02 PM alx098: A different angle. I was having restart problems when connecting and thought that it was my modem. Screen went BLACK and restarted, Norton scandisc, whole nine yards. After a month of trying anything, I broke and called my tech support. He had me reduce my graphics accelerator and download " Direct X" form Microsoft. Two days now and no restarts. Keeping my fingers crossed, was really aggravating. Try it , you can always reset it if it doesn't work. BTW don't get the 7 version, some gaming guys were trying to delete and couldn't. Said they were having problems with it Good luck /forum/smile.gif the pickel alx098 11-14-1999, 03:14 PM Just wanted to thank everybody for the help. I have changed the modem to a different IRQ and it seems to be working just fine. SysOpt.com
