I'm a bit sketchy on facts with this car but its runnin a bit rough

This Shape
http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d115/12JJM12/Car%20Stuff/volvo740_04s.jpg

Late 80's early 90's
Volvo 740 GL/GLE
2.0L injection 4 Cyl
No Cat (never had one)
115/125K
Don't think its the original Motor (Block painted bright red)
No oil leaks to speak of
Uses a bitta water mainly due to a dickky hose
Doesn't smoke unduely
Goes OK, ya gotta whoop its hiney a bit to get it there, but it goes (120Mph etc)
Fuel pumps work (both)

Will not idle properly ....... Either Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr 2K Rpm or Cough stops..........

Starts fine ......

I dunno whats inside the octipus (Distributor) because its on the firewall end of the engine & I had my best pants on ;)

Plugs are grey (Normal) ...... no dust, smoke, oil or shine

Ya can adjust the air/idle........ to idle nicely ....... 5mins later Whirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr 3K (highest) ...... 2 mins after that 800Rpm ..............10 mins later Cough Stalls

Timing belt is probably in need of changing ....... But thats more syncronisation than fine tooning innit ...........

Anyone know what PSI I should be gettin' from the Cylinders ? & Degs BTCD fer the timing ?.............. How the hell do ya set up Injection any who ? I don't recon' it has a EMU/ECU (Central Brain) I recon' its all modular....

What says J00 ppls ? :t

Red is the normal color of a Volvo engine back then, sooo. What kind of compression you got? Have you checked for vacuum leaks? A miss could be a manifold gasket or some vacuum hose, etc, that's leaking. No clue on the timing, but if yer nice I'll tell yas how to set it with a vacuum gauge.

Vacoom guage huh ......... that'll take a bitta finding ........... I'll measure the compression & stuff to letcha know whats what ......... Spose I'd better have a indepth sken at the toobing to see if its loosin' any suck ;)

Is it contactless ignition? ......... ya know the one without points & condensor ........ Tiz a bollock of a place they put that octipus ..........

I will post back when I know a lil more :D

I'm here, what ya need to know? What type of injection is it? L jetronic or K jetronic? ( Clue, L is electronic and K is mechanical, look at the injectors, are there wires? )

Two common problems with these cars and both can cause your idle problem. The fuel pressure regulator can leak a lot of gas into the vacuum system and the Air Mass Meter can go bad.

On the fuel pressure regulator, pull the vacuum hose off of it and check if it smells like gasoline. If it does it's leaking.

For the air mass meter, disconnect the electric connection and see if the idle smooths out. Also, check the large plastic air duct from the air mass meter up to the engine intake, that duct can develop holes on the underside that let in extra air.

Right Leppers me old fruit .......... Some pickkies fer yas :D

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d115/12JJM12/oi-leppy.jpg

Thats what we got ....... & yeah its hissy as ferk ......... When ya spray WD-40 on here

http://i34.photobucket.com/albums/d115/12JJM12/loose-as-ferk.jpg

Which is loose as ferk by the way the car makes a different idle tone ......... Then al the WD-40 gets sucked in & it sounds carp again ......

How do I tighten the injectors up ? They don't seem to screw in ...... They seem to have some kind of spring clip carry on ....... It all looks mighty weired to me...... In fact the injectors are so loose Its amazing the car has any vacuum at all

Sounds like the seals are shot, gotta have new ones. That's prolly why the injectors are so loose. I always hated Volvos.

Ohh shouldn't the injector pipes have jubilee clips on em ? ........... They seem to be just shoved on (Both ends)

You're going to want to take all 4 injectors out of the engine. While you've got them out, find a shop that can test the spray pattern. It should be a nice conical pattern, if it's just pizzing out they need to either be cleaned or if that doesn't work they need replaced.

Then with new seals it should run a lot better.

The value of the vehicle doesn't support replacing injectors..... They either spray & the car runs or a scrapyard set are tried ........ Prof injector adjusting just doesn't come in to the equasion. The entire car could be replaced for £300

Gonna need new seals, not sure if it's a dealer item or not. Also, if they don't spray good, it's not gonna run well. But, it's old and that's expected. ;)

j.m@talk
02-21-2006, 05:12 PM
I don't recon we could make it run any worse, wiv it having such low vac at the mo ........... What these seals made of ? They gonna be dear ? ....... Yeah its gotta have em , I know ....... Was just wondering if to fgo & get some for him ............ Or might i come seriously unstuck doing that ;)

j.m@talk
02-21-2006, 06:35 PM
Yey found some injector seals £10.34 for a 4 cyl set ........ Nay too bad ......... I spose they will be along shortly ........ Tiz amazin' what ya can buy on line these days ;)

That ain't bad as Volvo are askin' fer £10 per injector ......... Robbin B@rstuards

Yay ....... Weeeel soon be a zoomin along :D

Shall I shove some jublee clips on whilst I'm at it ?

What says J00 ole Leppyious one ?
