I've noticed that the connection to my ISP has gone from 46-51k down to 28-36k in the last month. I tried on my wifes PC & she gets 45-49k, she's on a different line. We both have USR 56k fax modems, so all things look equal except the line. I found the USR test line & played around with it also. Since I am in the western suburbs of Chicago & they are in the north suburbs, I feel this is pretty reliable. I connect with a receive rate of 28-34k, hers gets a constant 49k. I also notice that most of the time my does not connect V.90, just V.34+. I feel the last test would be to swap the modems between the PCs.

Before doing that, does anyone know of other tests that would yield more data? Also, would the lack of a V.90 connection be attributed to a bad line, or could it be the modem? Any help appreciated

Well, I put the wife's modem in my PC & it was a lot faster than mine. The connection to USR was almost as fasy as on her line. I deleted the modems in my machine & reinstalled my modem. The connection speed is still way low. Looks like there is something wrong with my modem.

Thanks for the advice.

Just a thought, you can't always believe what you read. Try downloading and timeing an identical freeware, and compare. This is a good baseline, since these connection icons lie like a dog....
