I rarely restart my system b/c I use RamBooster and leave my system on constantly running RC5 for Sysopt. When I do restart or shutdown, it says I shutdown the system incorrectly. I have no registry errors as far as Mijenix Fix It Util 99 says and I have run scandisk without errors. I recently installed a 7200 RPM 20GB Maxtor and it is sandwiched between my floppy and another (5400 WD 13GB) HD. Could heat be the culprit or is there another possibility? I have a bay cooler for the HD on the way. Here are my system specs:
K6-2 400 @ 450
Soyo 5EMA+ V1.0
FSB 100MHz
256 MB PC100
Win 98SE (upgraded from Win98)
Thanks a bunch guys.

No, I dont think that heat would do that. Heat normally makes the system freeze up, and/or cause errors while the computer is on.My guess is that you need to run a prog. in windows/run that tells you the prog's windows had to skip to start your system. That does sound more like a reg. error. (but just like everything else it could be anything) I cannot remember the name of the prog. but if you allready know it then try that, ill post it l8tr.

I believe there is an update for the SE that addresses shut down problems. I don't know if addresses yours or not though. I had a similar problem with my computer, It would appear to shut down ok, but it would run scandisk the next time I would boot. My fix was to reinstall Windows 98 (but not just for that reason, Windows had become unstable).

Thanks for the replies guys. I unfortunatley found the problem though. Last night, right after I posted the message, I got a clicking sound and then my system froze. I restarted and got 'Primary Master & Primary Slave failure'. I assume my primary hd failed. I do have a wuestion though, would the primary failure of this type give me an error about the primary slave too if the second HD does not have an OS on it? thanks.

Any single adapter or harddisk etc.. that has failed on a buss can cause errors to be displayed on the other adapters or HD etc...
