Here's whats happening,

The computer will boot to windows just fine, however, after a few minutes, it locks up solid, 3 finger salute doesn't work. It locks up every time. This same computer has been working fine, with only an occasional lockup durring a 3d game (usually after a lengthy period of play). I believe that it may be temp related, because if I use the reset or power switch, it will lockup in a shorter period of time, or sometimes I will just get a continuous beep, and no display. I have found that it will also lock up in dos, and durring BIOS setup as well. When it locks up in dos, the curser continues to flash, but in windows, it stops. I have also had the display go blank after boot once or twice.

I have tried the processor in a different computer, and it worked just fine. I am using thermal paste on it (sparingly), and it is not overclocked. (K6-2 300/ 66Mhz.)

I have installed a different video card the
in the computer, and it still locks up. The original card is AGP, the substitute card was a PCI.

I have removed the sound card and modem so that the only card installed is the video, but it still locks up.

The computer has 32 Meg of EDO ram on simms.
Does RAM get hot and degrade or fail? I haven't tried substituting any ram yet. (I have to pull it out of my computer, and I hate to do that.) I'm not sure of the MB manufacturer, the model is a AI5VG+.

Anyone have some thoughts on this one?

David

I take it you dont have any temp sensers ?
run it and feel the heat sink also make sure the fan for the sink is running the sink can be warm but not so hot you cant touch it for long if it's that hot it's to hot /forum/smile.gif
also what is your v-core set at ? make sure it's what it is suposed to be.
thats all I can think of for now /forum/smile.gif hope it helps

The Vcore is set for 2.2 volts and the fan is working. (that was my first thought and hope before I opened up the case)
The heat sink is cool, and I'll check the bios for a temp reading ( if it has it)
Maybe I have a MB voltage reg or PS problem, I'll have to check the PS.

there is one othere thing to try totaly disasimble your system get a can of air and blow it all out every thing then put it back togather take your time and make sure every thing is inserted all the way.
with heat problems we usaly start with the chip but it could be any part of the system were any one piece is not making good contact when it's cold it works but as it heats up the gap gets bigger till BSD /forum/smile.gif

even give the bios chip a good push to make sure it's in all the way and inspect every thing for burns corrosion etc etc
that would be my next step /forum/smile.gif
hope it fix's it /forum/smile.gif

Try re-installing windows. If you do not want to go such a lengh, then at least ry running it with a normal vga driver, browse the net for a couple hrs and see if ti still freezes.

The system is only a month old (maybe I shouldn't admit to this, but I put it together for him, it worked fine then), it was a processor / MB / video card upgrade, I suggested to him at the time that he should consider upgrading the memory, but he didn't have the money for it(since memory prices had skyrocketed). I haven't had a chance to work with it yet today, but wanted to acknowledge everyones response. I'll let you know what I find, but if anyone has any other ideas, please let me know, I'll be checking in periodically.

thanks,
David

Problem resolved, it turned out to be the memory. If I put a little (very little) pressure on one simm in particular, it would lock up instantly. I removed them and installed a DIMM from my computer, and no more problems.

David have you tried to put a larger fan on your CPU, or an extra fan in your box? If it is heat related this might help /forum/smile.gif
