I've got this old 486 and I know somebody who needs something that he can do research on the web with, email etc. well I've got this old 486 with like 16megs or RAM(I think) and was wondering if it will run win 98. the kid doesn't have any money to spend on this so I'm planning on using norton's ghost to clone my HD which runs win 98. This is probably the most cost effective way of doing it. he won't play any games on it, just need it to run win 98, IE 5, and outlook express. will a 486 run win 98?

It'll run Win98 badly, and Win95 usably, if only a small ammount of software is running.

DON'T clone your HDD; that'll just give the 486 a lot of BSODs.

Unless the system you're ghosting from is a 486, the systems will have many differences, namely chipsets, bus mastering, PCI controllers, BIOS, etc.

I agree with Dominus...
it's bad enough running win95 on a 486, but I cannot see win98 running on it running in a usable state....

win 98 will run fine on it you will need to up the memery to at least 32meg though 64 would be the fastest. although I have run 98 with only 8 meg just to see if it would and it does LOL /forum/smile.gifwas slow as all get out but it worked. I've got 98 running on a 486DX2-66 with no problems for what he is going to do with it it should work O.K. my kids use it to play games runs jumpstart school programs ect ect keeps tyhem off my machine /forum/smile.gif

It wont be the fastest thing out lol /forum/smile.gif but it will work

it it takes 32 pin simms let me know I've got about 200 sticks setting around might can send ya a few sticks /forum/smile.gif

Well, I ran Windows 98 on a 486/133 with 20 megs of ram so I know it works. Yeah, it was slow, but it worked and fairly well for that thing I thought. If you want to go for an early Christmas present or something, I'd suggest popping the top and seeing what kind of memory chips it uses and then attempting to bump it up to 32 megs. If they are 30 pin simms, you'll find then extremelt cheap. If they are 72 pin, then you should stick with FPM memory and could prolly use 16 meg sticks. I'm just giving you my references for a similar system. I don't know if they can handle EDO memory or anything higher then 16 meg sticks. I used FPM 16 meg 72 pin sticks on 1 board and some 4 meg 30 pin simms on another... Matter of fact, I have a pile of 1 meg 30 pin simms lying around here. Haw!

I ran an old IBM 486DX33 with win95 and 16 megs of ram (eventually upped it to 24megs and a kingston turbochip 133 when I had a chance in october last year) for the last couple of years and
surfed the net with out any probs..The only things that I had any trouble with were the streaming applications and shockwave progs which were extremely slow...but other than that I could chat and run ICQ but I agree that more memory would help out a great deal....Hope that helped in your decision..

I know that this isnt exactly the forum but,

Hey Scotter I am interested in a cache card for an 486 IBM board ( a generic one might work also) if you got one. I believe it would be a 72 pin type, well that is what it looks like would fit in the cache slot LOL..maybe a couple of drive face plate covers too since I seem to have misplaced the ones I had LOL. Thanks...

Scotter,
Well I know that it is a L2 cache memory slot on a 486 board right next to the OD Zif socket it has cache memory silkscreened as a label next to the slot. It sorta looks like a processor slot 1 set up..What I mean about that is that it has posts on either side to hold the card or chip in that are taller than the simm slot posts.. It looks like to be 72 pin set up but Im not too sure LOL.
I have never seen one so I dont really know what it would look like LOL probably not a huge card "chip" maybe more like a simm card "chip" I would imagine...But e mail me about the covers so we can set up something...By the way I have been searching for this L2 for a loooooong while now LOL Thanks again.

While it will run 98, it will be slow. Why not but linux on it? It will scream, on par roughly with about a p200 running 98.

yeah linux would be great on the machine since i believe linux was designed to run on a 386. but the person I'm giving it to is really new to PC's so I believe windows would be more intuitive for him. do you know of good browers for linux. netscape 4.7?
