Hi Everyone, ok this is what I did. I installed a 20 gig HD. When I turned on the machine I got 1 long beep & 3 short, which is supposed to indicate, w/AMI Bios, 'Conventional/Extended Memory failure', (or possibly the video card).

Last night I unpluged 'everything' including the video card. Turned the machine on & again 1 long beep & 3 short beeps. I then removed the Ram, powered up & it beeped evenly several times, this is supposed to indicate that the mobo is ok & that it is the RAM that's bad.

This a.m. I reseated the CPU & the battery. Turned the machine on & no beeps, considering the above scenario, I thought, ok, it could be that reseating the CPU did it or it's definetly the RAM, but which bank, so I then put 2 banks back in at a time. No beeps either time, put all 4 banks back in & now no beeps at all, ok maybe it's not the RAM! Removed the Ram once again, powered up & now no beeps even anymore. Ok maybe it's the mobo?

My machine is down to the barest, fan turns on, there is power. So, OK, so where do I go from here. I am desperately trying to isolate the problem so if its something I can fix, I will. You know it's the old $$ game & like everybody else maybe, I am in the middle of a project that I'll earn a few dollars with, but won't if I can't fix it, everything is still under warrenty, except for the RAM, but if I have to send anything in, mobo, video card, etc., that will take time. So time is of the essence. Thanks in advance for any help offered. Gayle

ok step by step:

the machine was running fine until you replaced the old HDD with the new 20Gig

so what can it be:
a.) the new HDD needs MUCH more power than the old one what is very unlikely and therefore your mobo has some probs to give your ram/whatever enough power (just a plain guess, i dont understand anything of power comsumption etc. /forum/smile.gif) even if it is so that shouldn't be a reason for the bleeps.
b.) you somehow touched some senistive parts of your mobo or slightly 'moved' sth. .. but since you completely rebuilt the whole system and its still bleeping it must be sth. else

btw. the bleeping sounds very familiar to me ... on my old board the bleeping (1 long, 3 short .. but AWARD BIOS) occured about once a month .. all i had to do was to reseat my old matrox mystique

So its either the RAM or the VideoCard ....... maybe /forum/smile.gif

Hi athlet,
The old HD crashed, that's why the new HD, My mobo is a Pentium class & supposed to support larger HD's.

What worries me now is that last night before I removed the RAM it beeped & then after removing the RAM it beeped then when I put the RAM back in this a.m. 'it didn't'. Since it beeped before when I removed the RAM, why not now?

Does that make any sence? should I even worry? should I try & put everything back in, on thing at a time, and just go from there or what?

Thanks Again, Gayle

This time, the ram was seated properly. Please post a problem just once. I answered the other thread.

Hi again, well you probably won't believe this but now I have no power @#$%^&*( ???

what now??

Could this all be because of an intermittent power problem?

Oh boy am I getting frustrated or what??

Well I reseated the RAM & now have power?
What a mystery. Could RAM not properly seated cause this or should I look into a new power supply?

Yes, ram not seated all the way can cause this. Sounds like it's ok now.

Howdy, This message is to just say thanks to everyone for coming to my aid so quickly.

This is a great site, which I have bookmarked for future reference. Do I hear moan & groans in the background? Nah!! couldn't be.

This technology may cause me terrible frustrations but I love it and am learning alot!!!! I have, believe it or not, taken some classes at our local Comm. College, but doing it is a great way of learning. Iv'e been doing alot lately!!!!!!!!!!!!1

I am puting my machine back together one thing at a time, powering up to see if it all goes well, so far so good.

Thanks so much for all your help & patience.
Gayle
