I am currently using a NIC w RJ-45 Cable to connect to my Cable Modem. I want to pull the NIC and install an USB 2.0 Card in the empty PCI slot, then use an USB 2.0 to Ethernet Adapter with the RJ-45 Cable.
This will give me some free USB 2.0 Ports - something I don't have now. Sadly my MB has but (2) PCI Slots. One has a RAID Card, the other the aforementioned NIC.
Will this work ?

Be sure to get an NEC card.
Here's a combo card:

You could also keep your network adapter and just add a powered USB hub. It's cheaper.

What is an NEC Card ?
Nice Combo Card, but I own the 4-Port USB 2.0 Card I plan to use already. I bought it for $9.99 on sale before I even had a use for it.
I don't think any USB Hub will help, as my MB has only USB 1.1 on-board.

No - but you didn't say that you needed USB 2.0. I assumed that you had it already.
If the card does not have an NEC chip on it, you may have big headaches in store.

I'll check the chip on the USB 2.0 Card first before I buy the USB/Ethernet Adapter. Is NEC is the only good manufacturer ? What will happen with other makers ?

Yes - NEC is the only dependable manufacturer.
I don't know what will happen. VIA and ALi cards are unpredictable.

I put a USB 2.0, 4-port pci card in one of my pc's with an ALi chip. The card has a brain **** about once a week where I have to unplug the devices and plug back in to wake the darn thing up. I network it through an home PNA using usb and someone in the family complains that they can't open their home page (or anywhere else) and I have to unplug the network adapter to get the thing started again. It's a nuisance - not a headache but if it were any less accessible it'd be a pain. Bill speaks the truth.

Well, as luck would have it my USB 2.0 Card DOES have an NEC Chip, so I'm going to order an USB/Ethernet Adapter and give it a try. Thanks !
