I have a 200MMX P, Award Bios v1.0A, with a Quantum Bigfoot 4.3G hard drive. After memory check I get "Primary master had disk fail" and "Floppy disk fail (40)."
I've checked the cables and tried to specify the correct HDD in CMOS. What really confuses me is the floppy disk fail.
Help!

I have award bios and a quantum fireball 9 gig hard drive. When I fried some of the sectors from overclocking it gave me the same deal. Have you been overclocking? But other than that, The bios had a hard time finding the quantum as it was. if everything wasnt perfect it didnt see it...maybe the two just dont get along very well....is this a new problem or are you trying these together for the first time?

It my son's old computer that is now a hand me down for me. It's a new problem. I don't think he was trying to overclock but an ethernet card was installed and then removed. Apparently the Award Bios auto recognition doesn't see the Quantum.
The two have always been in this computer and worked fine together.
Any thoughts on why the floppy isn't recoginzed?
Thanks for the response.

make sure the cables are pluged in the correct way pin 1 to the red ribbon and are inserted all the way also try new ribbons if that is not it. and make sure the power suply is pluged it to both the right way
Also do you have a ide card or is it all on the motherboard? if it's a card the card might need to be reinserted or replaced oof it on the mobo might be time for a new mobo ?

That message means (has always meant to me!)the floppy drive is not connected. I've received that message 3 or 4 times! Freaked out the first time till I checked my cables. On my system, the cable leading to the drive is just long enough. Just inserting my hand near it to reach another component invariably knocks it out.
Good luck! /forum/smile.gif
Regarding the HD, I've always found setting the CMOS to auto is the way to go for my systems. I have had 40 pin IDE cables go bad on me simply because I have removed and re-inserted them between the HD and the motherboard one time too many. Can you test the IDE cable on another machine? You can pick up new cables fairly inexpensively. /forum/wink.gif

Check all the cables inside the case. Make sure they are the right way. If it was working fine before, then they should be in the right way. Did your son have the cover off recently? If a cable is backwards, and you try and boot it, you have immediate problems.
If your getting the floppy failure, and HDD failure still after trying everything you can, then it sounds like your motherboard just self destructed all together.
