I have a IBM 18G, it worked OK at ATA 33 on my old rig. I got a new PC133 Tyan board (Tyan 371)&(supports DMA 66) Now when it boots it stops at the Windows 98 "splash" screen. I suspect that Windows won't support the new HD. What do I do now???

Thanks in advance....

Do you have an ATA66 cable?

Yes. In fact the one that came with the MB was defective, & boot-up told me so. I changed it out. Basically I have so far Re-loaded windows, reset & re-did the cmos. The screen hangs at the Windows Banner screen. I understand that Win98 doesn't support DMA 66, Where can I get drivers?
Also, I haev the Award BIOS, & there is no update on the TYAN website.
Ideas??

It's not Win98, it's the chipset. Abit and others have a modification in the chipset of their boards that support ata66.
Run the drivers for the board again.

Have you tried going into windows in safe mode and checking out all the system settings? There may be a hint for you in there of what is stopping the process.

Hmm... if you haven't disabled the onboard IDE controller do so, since it may be fighting with the Tyan card for controll of IDE devices.

Also check for IRQ assignments and if the have the manual of the card read it... /forum/smile.gif

How do you change from DMA33 to DMA66 with the IBM drive. The only DMA66 drive I have used is a Western Digital and with it it is done with a boot disk program. I supect problems with DMA66/DMA/33 mode. With a WD drive, as set from factory in DMA66 mode, on a DMA33 controler, it also stops at the spash screen. It seems unlikly that the reverse woud be true. You might try setting the drive to DMA33 and see if it makes it all the way into windows. Also, double check the bios on the board and make sure it isn't set to dma33.

I wrote to TYAN tech support. There was no drivers for the VIA/PC133/Award Combo, only BX w/win95.
Regarding the Bios, there is no DMA 33/66 choice to make. Everything is pretty much covered by "auto" and change I tried did nothing good.

Try IBM's website, they have a few utilities there for ata66 drives. One in particular is the (forgot name of file) one that allows you to turn ata66 off and on.
A friend had a similar problem and he used the diskette that came with the drive to install drive overlay and the drive has booted ever since.
Another thing to try is to set the pio mode of the drive to mode3 and turn off udma. This is for troubleshooting purposes but it should get the machine booting.

I got it going by doing a fresh HDD install.
I used the IBM utility to fdisk, but it would'nt take DOS (not enough room, it said). So I used the win98 crash disk to reformat. Fdisk, Format C: Then I did a SYS:C, I loaded win 3.1, then went directly to WIN98 (fat 32).
All is well--it flies!!

However..... My HDD is shown as having a capacity of 16.7 Gig, rather than 18 G.I'm not greedy, but I an curious where it went.

Thanks for all of your replies!!
