This is what I got:

Athalon 500 processor
FIC SD11 mobo
Kenwood true 52 cd-player
Voodoo 3 2000 AGP video card
56k modem
Brand new 3.5 floppy drive
WD 13g hard drive
128 mb PC100 SDRAM

I tried to install win 98 and in using my boot disk to enable CD support I allways get all types of errors as soon and windows tries to detect what kind of devices I have. So I tried a old 2X CD-Rom I had (because I have the drivers to this one to install it in dos) to try to avoid the boot up disk deal all together. In using the 2X the installation go good until I get to the end were windows restarts to finalize settings and then I start getting other types of errors. I restart in safe mode and if I click on any of the desktop icons I get more errors, but I can use the start menu! I have refomatted the drive, I tried taking out all of the hardware and it still pulls the same stuff?

What can I do? Do I have a bad Mobo?

Thanks for any help!!!!!!

I just read that I am having the same type problems as usafcolone151 is lower down on the page but there is not an awnser on how to fix it!!

I had the same sort of problem installin win98 on an old machine for a friend of mine. I found that as it tried to install the drivers it would crash at a certian point. I had access to another computer so i installed the correct drivers for the drive on to the disk and added the relevant line into the config.sys and autoexec.bat files (just follow the examples already there) and then i REM'd out all other driver calls in these files. It then booted fine from the boot disk and the CD worked properly.
This may not help your problem as i don't know what error messages you were getting. But it may be worth a shot.

I have had several problems with installing Win98 on faster systems. Here are a few things to check out...

Check the BIOS settings and set them to fail-safe. Especially pay attention to the RAM settings, as wrongly setup RAM can cause a whole range of strange errors.

Setup your CD drive in DOS mode and copy the Win98 directory to a folder on your hard drive. Installing Win98 from the HD is much less hassle!!!

If you want to test your RAM to see if it is causing the errors, make a boot disk and edit the config.sys with this line...

DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS /TESTMEM:ON

This will do the good old DOS memory check. This will possibly error if you RAM isn't working properly.

Also, one more last thing, if your motherboard has a VIA chipset, go to there web site and get the latestest drivers. Without them you get all sorts of strange errors...
