I downloaded the newest version of Spywareblaster, per Jakk's thread...and took the poll as I was waiting for it to download. I thought this was funny...folks still fooling themselves with AA and Spybot...

So what are you recommending in the free department

The only good/free antispyware app is MS Beta.

If you are willing to pay a minimal fee, CounterSpy gets my recommendation.

A good measure at this point in time is can your favorite A/S find and kill Spyaxe and its evil partner, smitfraud? Webroot SpySweeper can...I don't know of any others.

I think that it's a good measure because it tells me which team is aggressively updating their definitions.

And it's been said many times, there is no one A/S solution that will defend your comp by itself. You need an ARRAY.

SpywareBlaster
SpywareGuard
Ewido
Ad-Aware
Spybot

A friend uses Webroot and verified the kill.

What they neglect to understand is the need for a real-time scanner . '"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. "

Rocketmech,

I, absolutely, concur. CounterSpy is real time and has on-going updates. It, actually, catches Trojans, as well as the threatening and non-threatening spyware.

My ounce of prevention costs me $19.95. I pay bills on-line. Prevention is important to me.

I, also, have Trojan Hunter and PC-cillin. Pay now or pay later.

I like to prevent spyware from ever getting on my system in the first place. Then I don't really need to worry about detection ability. Layered defense is definately the way to go.

okay so what are the best defences? I use windows firewall and Macaffee. Shouldn't that be enough?

McAfee is OK and Windows firewall might be enough if you are behind a router, but you still need spyware and adware protection.
Give the sticky at the top of "Application and Operating Systems" a read.

At the very least, you should add Microsoft AntiSpyware (beta) to your defences.

Yes, a strong "front line" is important, but nothing we have now is impervious.
That is why you also need a multi-faceted defense scheme that backs up your front line if something gets through. And something will.

I have noticed that computer security types in general recommend the following:

(1) Hardware Firewall
(1) Software Firewall
(1) Anti-Virus
3-4 Anti-Spyware/Anti-Adware solutions

If you carefully hand pick the low resource users you can build an efficient and effective defense. Several of the great apps are freeware or donationware.

I use all free apps now days

a router (well not really free)
Spywareblaster
MRUblaster
The Proxomitron
scan occasionally with anti spyware apps (free)
Use an AV app if I'm not using an app control program
trying out SensiveGuard at the moment (it's pretty good) it has some app control

The best defense I have found so far for spyware is The Proxomitron; Have it on my kids pc's also and they've yet to be hit with any spyware. They both use IE exclusively.
If I'm surfing less trusted sites I will also use Tor and Privoxy with The Proxomitron to surf anonymously.
The people that write filters for proxo are extremely good at what they do; I've attached a small sampling of their work

The more the better I run:
Webroot
Spywareblaster
Ad-Aware SE
Spybot
Sygate Firewall
AVG7
This setup seems to work very good, the only one that I pay for is Webroot, it with my Earthlink. And I won't complain about the other items they are for free.
Good Luck :)

It is the same except no Norton AV & No AVG
That systems has McAfee Enterprise A/V

Both are on a dsl line thru a Westel 327W Modem / Router
