My hard drive finally died on me, so I bought an IBM 7200 rpm. I formatted and started installing the win98 upgrade, only to discover that the disk is so scratched (oops)that it would not finish installing. Soooo, while I am waiting for BillyG to send me a new one (for $20), I installed my old windows95. After installing it I discovered that it was version "C" win95, this version has FAT32 and USB support (in fact I unknowingly used a win98 start-up disk).
Can anyone think of a good reason to up-grade when I get my new win98 disk? I would just like get your thoughts on the subject.
Thanx
Sorry,I should have posted this in General Discussion. I will re-post it there if anyone would like me to .

Yes, I can think of 3 right of the bat:
1. Scanreg - to scan/repair the registry
2. SFC (system file checker)
3. msconfig - allows many custom configuration tweaks, like disabling scandisk on bad shutdown and not starting certain things so the computer can boot faster
Once you have used these features you discover that they make sense.
I would not recommend installing 98 over 95 though - it is always best to do a fresh install.
On the negative: I hate W98 defrag - takes forever and quits on some systems. I also never do the active desktop or view as webpage options. My systems are running hybrid 95b&c (plus many patches), it works so I am reluctant to upgrade.

I bought the Win 98 2nd Edt. and it totally
thrashed my computer. I sold it to Zotzmein
and hope all goes well on his computer. I have the Win 98 w/ the IGMP Security, the TELNET, and Year 2000 Update 2 updates and
this works for me. I wanted to use the networking feature, but will get a "Buddy"
a computer cloning device so that I can get my kid hooked up. Good luck whatever your choice.

I'm running Win95B with patches and some freebee utilities.I'm satisfied with it for now. However, when I bought a USB MS Precision Pro j-stick,it said I would need Win 98 to run it through the USB....figures! Anyhow, you may have some problems with USB devices and Win 95.....DawgTuff.
