I am going to upgrade to a bigger hard drive and I will be installing from scratch Windows 98.
I had upgraded my Windows 95 with the 98 Upgrade but I also have a copy of the full version of Windows 98.
I was thinking of starting with a fresh install using the full version when i upgrade my hard drive.
Is installing a new hd difficult? What is FDISK exactly??
I am upgrading to a Western Digital 18 or 20GB drive when i upgrade.
advice thanks!!!!!!!!!!!

I would do a clean install of every thing that way your starting out with every thing hopfuly the way it is supposed to be and not trasfering any proplemms from the old drive
make a boot disk with win 98. when you have the new disk installed boot from the disk. run fdisk to set it up then restart. boot from the disk again and run format then you will be ready to reinstall every thing good luck /forum/smile.gif

I am a great fan of WD install software. Just go to the WD site and download their new instal prog. Download it and unzip it, copy it to a floppy. Install the HD put the floppy in - turn on the machine and follow the directions it only takes about 15 min from start to finish installing 98 if you have a 40X or better CD rom. Forgot to mention after formatting with the WD disk shut down and go to BIOS and change the boot sequence to CDRom first. put your 98 CD in and boot the machine, win 98 CD is bootable, the easiest OS to install there is (I think). After 98 installed when you get the screen that asks where to boot from exit out and reset the BIOS to A-C-D or whatever you wish then reboot.

I also like WD hard drives, it is quite easy to install a new drive. Here is a list of software you will need. 1: #1 dos disk to boot your computer to the A prompt. 2:like Bleep said you need a WD install disk. 3: Win 98 start up disk. 4: copy of your CD rom driver. Just insert the dos disk and when it loads press f3 two times. This will bring you to the A: prompt. Then insert your WD install disk follow the instructions when it asks for your win95 startup disk insert your win98 startup and set your drive up for fat 16 or fat 32. Then it will load your command com and give you a bootable drive. Then install your CD drivers you will need to reboot your system. Then install Win 98 CD and you're on your way.

Another method: If you have the full version of win98, just put the drive in, set the bios to "boot from cd" and start up with win98cd. It will do everything for you inclding setting up and formatting the new drive.
As far as the hardware side of it, when you install the drive check the jumpers on the back to Master or Slave. From what I've read of your situation set to Master. In bios have everything to auto. Easy install that way. If not check the manuals to how you should set it up in bios.
