Does anybody know if there is a way to install Windows 98 SR2 to a Win 95 machine? I thought I had the original 98 CD but it turns out its the 2nd edition upgrade. When I try to run it on a 95 machine, it tells me I need to install 98 first. Any way to trick the system? Thanks

not positive but you should beable to do a clean installof just win 98. reformat your hard drive and reinstall just win98 it will ask for a older version of windows put in your win95 cd it will scan it for upgrade compliance, and you should be good to go for a clean install of just win 98 then.
Note make sure you back up every thing you realy need be for reformating your hard drive /forum/smile.gif

I have to disagree with them. I have windows 98SE and I always have to install the regular win98 before I can install 98SE. I would also like to know if there is a way around it. It's annyoing having to install windows twice. But I wouldn't format my hard drive unless you know for sure.

I installed the retail 98SE upgrade over my old 95a and didnt have any probs.(I must say that I also used 98Lite to get rid of the excess that I never use and dislike like IE) I also did it a second time but similar to what scotter said but I had upgraded to a larger HD and it was a breeze to do as before. Is this the full upgrade retail cd? or is it the smaller version upgrade cd that would have been gotten directly from microsoft? If it is the smaller version maybe that is why it keeps asking for the original 98 version....Hope that is any help...Someone let me know if I am wrong in this assumption... /forum/smile.gif

Fishboy are you talking about the windows 98 update disk that you can only get from microsoft that just has IE5 and the update files on it.
Or are you talking about windows 98 SE ? that you can buy in any store?
if it's just the update disk from microsoft then you have to have windows 98 on your system.
If you some how got those updates in to windows 95 it would probably crash your system make sure you have the right disk /forum/smile.gif

The CD is the 20 buck upgrade from Microsoft. Formating seems very extreme since the computer I want to put this on is not my own. I dont get an option to search for a previous version of Windows. It just says that an operating system is already installed and windows cant upgrade this version. Upgrade to 98. By the way, in other news, yesterday I passed the Core part of the A+ exam with an 88.

Hey Fishboy, Congratulations are in order!! Good job!
I know the ones you missed were probably vague and ambiguous, and called for a simple answer but you were thinking complex.
Anyway, good job.
BTW - the $20 98upgrade CD probably won't install W98 on anything

Ive done some research and came across an article that says I need to rename setupx.dll and setupx.w95. Problem is, I dont seem to have setupx.w95. I am trying to extract it from the CAB files but I have not found it yet. This solution comes directly from MS.

Actually Scotter, my initial guess that the CD was SR2 was wrong. It is the original 98. I have the SR2 disk as well. So my problem is I cant install original 98 cd to Win95B "Your computer already has an operating system installed which cannot be upgraded by this version of setup. You need to obtain the windows 98 upgrade. Message SU0168" I will continue to play with the info I pulled from MS

if it is the windows 98 upgrade CD then i would do a clean install and not just upgrade 95 about 70% of the time you'll end up with more problems than you will know what to do with. espeacialy if you have any older devices on your system. back up any files you need to save reformat your hard drive and do a clean install have your win95 disk handy for when it ask for the upgrade compliance check and your all set it will even work with windows 3.1 floppys I know I've done it many times /forum/smile.gif
it will save you a lot of pain and frustration in you wont have to trouble shoot why this or that is not working right /forum/smile.gif
/forum/smile.gifjust my personal experancies with using the upgrade disk for 98 /forum/smile.gif

Here is something you could also try that worked for me, but I have not seen anyone mention yet. Again, let me stress that this worked for ME (multiple times), but I have not really seen or heard of anyone else doing it.
Copy the Win98 SR2 cab files from your CD ROM to the c:\windows\options\cabs directory. Make sure that you copy all of the other files and subdirectories too that are contained in whatever directory it was that housed the cab files as well.
Then using a boot disk, boot up the machine and rename the file on your hard-disk called WIN.COM (it should be in the c:\windows directory). I suggest renaming to something simple to remember like WIN.BAK or WIN.MOC
Next, while still booted up using the diskette, run the SETUP.EXE file for Win98 R2 from the c:\windows\options\cabs directory.
This will begin the win98 install. When you get to the point that is asks for verification of the upgrade cd, place your Win95 CD ROM into the drive and point the install app to read from that. Win98 install should then proceed to perform the installation and will keep your existing folders and short-cuts from Win95 in tact.
When it gets to the portion of the install where it asks what directory you want to install win98 to, it will provide you with two options. Either install to windows.000 or another directory. Choose another directory, and specify it to be Windows. It will then tell you that it already exists, and that files will be over-written and will want to know if you wish to proceed. Say yes, and the cab files will over-write themselves without issue.
Best of luck.

How do I install the OEM/Full version over an existing version of Windows?
The only method from the OSR2 FAQ that works is Method 1: rename (or mark as hidden, or delete) all instances of WIN.COM on your hard drives, and then
run setup from the DOS prompt.

Im going to try that suggestion about renaming win.com. I tried renaming windows through DOS (move c:\windows c:\windoze) but that did not work. I actually had problems renaming back to windows it until I discovered move.exe was in windows\command.Thanks!
