I keep getting this error "Windows encountered an error in the system registry. Please close your programs and restart Windows now......."

I have an ASUS P3B-F motherboard. I have rebuilt the system 5 times and continue to get the error - with or without loading any applications. Has anyone ever known this to reflect a motherboard problem?? The RAM tests OK using a DOS utility. I've updated the BIOS and installed the patches from the ASUS utility CD that came with the board. I've never had this kind of problem - where rebuilding the OS didn't fix the problem. I've also never had a motherboard that was bad that didn't give me more obvious problems than registry errors.

Anyone have any ideas????

Stumped..............

If you could list some more of your hardware, it would be helpful.

Any spontanious reboots? Are there are any other problems whether they are small or not?

Windows registry may or is corrupted and the backup one may also have been affected... windows may have backup a copy of the corrupted one.

Try "scanreg /restore" or "scanreg /fix" from DOS and maybe it will recover your registry.

Along with the MB I have an AWE 64 soundcard, Zoom modem - internal PCI, Maxtor 8.5GB HDD, 192 MB SDRAM (100) and my video card. I don't experience any other problems, and I don't see how the registry can get corrupted if no other applications are being installed.

Hmm... Nasty error you've got there. This could be caused by a whole range of problems from failing HD to buggy drivers. Have you experienced any other unusual behavour? Crashing, random errors etc... Do you actually get into windows, or is this a DOS message that keeps appearing? Is your processor overclocked and what speed is the RAM running at. It maybe best to set your BIOS setting to fail-safe and see if that makes a differnce. I would suspect that the problem lies with the HD and it could possibly be a virus. Good Luck...
